Let's face it, Bethany is a boring character and the average sword in the game has more personality than she does.

Bethany works for me much more than Carver did. Act 1 makes far more sense with her.

If I could, I would switch Anders for Bethany in a heartbeat... Bethany is so adorable, she is the sister I never had(In a sence)

I do find her... Less than compelling. She's nice and all, but I didn't really get into her. I also found the act 3 reunion a bit lacking. My first time, I played a mage and sent Carver to the wardens and there was this big conversation when he rejoined the party. A real heartfelt reunion. I sent Bethany to the circle, and maybe it's different if she joins the wardens, but I didn't have the same sense of reuniting with my sibling that I had with Carver. Though I guess that has less to do with her overall personality then the writing. And as I said, I don't know if it's different if she joins the wardens.

She's nice little girl, that's about it. Too nice and .. somewhat timid.
I prefer Carver since he has more .. character.
That said, I liked Bethany's party banter with Izzy and Varric.

I gotta give Bioware writing credit in this respect: They made Carver and Bethany two very different siblings and almost polar opposites, thus everyone could find something they liked in one they might not find in the other.

Personally i hate carver and love bethany. But i can understand perfectly why other people have the opposite reaction.

So while others can gripe about bethany all they want, I believe bethany and carver together make a much more complete family experience.

The best RPGs are the ones that give you a range of choices afterall :)

Bethany gets a bit whiny and resents Hawke if she becomes a warden.

I personally like Carver better only because the relationship he has with Hawke is very much like the relationship I've got with my younger brother. Obviously, I haven't gone out and become a hero or anything, but it's always been a pissing contest between the two of us ... and I'm "winning" in that I do better than he does, but he's still mommy's little boy where I'm not. I don't have the experience to draw on to make Bethany deeper like I do with Carver, but I could totally see the appeal in playing in a world where a sibling likes me.

... for once.

Bethany is as dull as dishwater and disappointed me because in DAO every character had a distinct and interesting personality. To have her as my 1st companion made me feel like they had lost integrity in creating characters.

I've said it before, girl is unbuttered toast. She's nice, I would hang out with her, but she's pretty dull. I like Carver way better. So I guess it's good I actually like playing mages this time around (I never once finished a mage playthrough in DA:O, and I played that sucker to completion ten freaking times)!

She does get pretty crabby as a Grey Warden ... I liked it, I won't lie. I felt bad about the whole thing. In a good way!

You know, I think she may be! Only without a hilarious love scene.

Bethany had plenty of personality, I find, and her banter with Isabela is downright hilarious. It's not her lack of personality, it's the lack of strife that accompanies her. She's too downright agreeable with Hawke, gets along with him, and it doesn't bring out a whole lot in either of them. By contrast, Carver's a lot more raw emotion, particularly in the scene after "Birthright". It caused more resonance.

I did enjoy her, but not when compared to Carver.

I liked some of her banter, but I generally found her a little bland. I liked that she was upset about going to the wardens though, and her pre-final-battle scene is nice and touching. Carver was a lot more in-your-face with his personality, which I found more interesting even if he could be a bit of a pain.

I liked her. Thought she was sweet and cute. Definitely cuter than Merrill anyway but I dint want to draw comparisons between an LI and a sibling, because we really don't need to take threads into THAT direction.

Do people that don't like bethany want her to be removed from future games in favor of carver?

Could you elaborate on why?  Just curious (playing a mage right now).

Because gathering money to protect my sister gives the plot a bit more urgency. That Hawke manages to raise the money, goes on the expedition, but still loses the sister she was trying to protect also resonates with the ending where Hawke attempts to save Kirkwall but fails.

Carver, on the other hand, constantly complained about his mage sister and the 'her templars.' He doesn't seem to do anything as a character other than be resentful.
