Yeah, basically I see three options:

1) set every NPCs sexuality (straight, gay, bi) in stone ahead of time. (The realistic option)

2) make everyone Hawkesexual and non-aggressive (The passive choice option)

3) let players select their sexuality while NPCs of interest are Hawkesexual and aggressive depending on personality (The active choice option)

Anyone agree with that?

Yeah, but Isabella didn't push it after that. You were never forced into a decision to romance her or heartbreak her and gain rivalry.

There's no problem with an NPCs expressing interest. Zevran did it all the time in Origins, but he never got pissed at you for being straight.

With Anders it seemed like you had to either be a jerk early in the conversation to nip it in the bud. All olive branch option led right to a two way fork in the road.

And that is the only part of this all that I had any small bit of problem with.

I didn't spend time on the forum when I was playing DAO. Was this such a big deal then? Was there a hang Zevran from a tree because he hit on male wardens movement? Most important, why is this such a big deal? This is getting as insane as the violent video games turn people into mass murders debate.

I do like the way they handled sexuality in the first game more as each person had a set preference. I think that added more depth to each of the characters more than making them based on the gender of the main character.Gay and bi friends I have had over the years were gay or bi no matter who they were hanging out with.

Yes, there was some hate- I won't say a lot because it's too hard to gauge- for Zevran because he flirts with and talks about sex with both men and women.

I agree with you and the OP that I prefer the way it was handled in Origins.  It's also odd that this "straight male gamer" has gotten so much attention.

Wasn't that one of the best parts about Zev? :P

Don't be a hater. A transgender NPC would be completely fine but just work more in a sex-set situation (my option #1) or an active choice situation (my option #3).

Heck, if they made it an option you could even choose to be a transgender Hawke too. Talk about inclusive.

The human condition is just getting more complicated. God imagine the character creation menu if they did everything possible:

Please select the genetalia you were born with.
Next select the genetalia you have now.
Select what sexes/genders are you interested in.

There's probably even more I'm unaware of at the moment.

The fact that there are a large number of bisexual characters in DA2 does not bother me at all. In fact, the the only thing that really bothers me in terms of romances in Bioware games are the romances Shepard can have with alien companions in the Mass Effect franchise. And I am only bothered by those due to "mechanical" issues rather than moral ones.

Oh god, Zevs cameo in DA2 was awesome!

Made me want to boot Anders out and take him instead.
Starting a female rouge for DA2 now but definitely not going to romance Anders out of my annoyance with him in my male run-through.

Yeah, I'm all for more options for people, but prefer having defined NPCs not Hawkesexuals or handwavey "oh, he's really not straight or gay or bisexual since you didn't see the alternative in your single playthrough."  Just have straight, gay or bi NPCs. FWIW, I think New Vegas did this really well- just have companions who have a defined sexual identity, but don't make it their defining characteristic. Thats why Arcade Gannon is awesome- he's gay, but thats not the defining feature of who he is.

Its stupid how this thing is getting so much attention when the game has so many other glaring flaws that should be discussed.

That would be awesome.  And after that, who knows.  Maybe we'll get bigender, genderqueer, and intersex options...

Of course, it would have to be done incredibly tactfully, especially in regards to creating transgendered NPC's.  I could see a lot of people getting really offended really quickly.

This is such an issue just because of peoples' unwavering opinions on sexuality. Yeah, it makes life a little more complicated, but we're all the better for being more understanding.

Just a question though:

I'm unfamiliar with the terms transqueer and intersex. Thats-Your-Funeral, can you give me an explanation?

heh, I'll bet the DA team will have a party after reading this and knowing they caused this debate and some people are getting more educated from it.

That only bothers me in as much as the only human option for women in ME2 is vile and repulsive.

It is a fantasy world, so in theory our perception of sexuality could be very different (******/bi-sexuality may be much more common on Thedas) - it's something which I don't think has been commented on in the game lore (I might be wrong though). But I do understand why it can feel jarring.

Why would you go for a guy that's basically "minority quota from tech support", when one can have Garrus instead? :o

Because Garrus has a carapace with pointy bits...
Yeah I still went with him.

What I don't understand is why people think making all the LI choices bisexual diminishes the characters development. Last I checked, my sexuality was not a personality trait. It doesn't define me. :)

Yes, I can see why it'd be annoying to not have diversity in their sexualitys, but between the choice of not being able to romance Anders or Fenris as a male, or Isabella or Merril as a female, why are you *complaining*? I'd rather not go back to having to stare at Morrigan from afar TYVM, or worse romance her and having her call me a male every step of the way. I worry enough about who I'm allowed to hit on IRL - games are my escapism, having that worry removed is a joy. <3

Seriously, there's nothing wrong with giving everyone access to all the LI's - we gaymers have perferences too, and BioWare shamelessly pandering to them is to be celebrated, IMO.

Given that Garrus is... well Garrus, I'm willing to let that (and a number of related things) slide, so to speak

But thats it why does every romance option need to be bi, it might not diminish the character but it diminishes the romances,

It initially bothered me that Anders made the first move, because I thought rejecting him would damage our friendship...
In all my playthroughs since then I have gone rivalry with him because I think it makes more sense to be rivals with the terrorist, and makes it more awesome when the time comes

How so?  It makes a romance less romance-y because both a man and a woman can do it? I don't see that one at all.

I humbly request an explanation.
