I'm curious as to how many people just forget locked chests and go with a 3rd party member that's actually interesting anf useful in combat...

I find the two rogue NPC's rather boring...  and not useful in combat.

I started to feel rogues to be of little use, too. But then I discovered that some sidequests require you to find notes, which often are in locked containers. I also skilled and equipped that rogue with a bow and fire arrows to have an artillery helping to take out foes not easily reachable by melee right away. So they can be useful, but are not mandatory for winning the game.

In fact I think Bioware could have given rogues more purpose by putting more dangerous traps or allowing them to find an alternative way through cunning instead of fighting. Like sneaking past the monsters and such. It is possible already, but there is much more potential IMHO.

I rarely took Zev in my team, but I enjoyed the conversations. So to me he is not boring at all. :)

The beauty of having so many different classes is that those which don't suit your playstyle can just be subbed out with another.

My Hero is a Human Rogue, and against many mobs his defense is high enough that he takes about as much damage as my tank -- yet he dishes out more damage consistently and can unlock almost any chest he's come across.

I've been able to run through parts of the Deep Roads with Zevran and two mages and have been fine -- but I like Oghren for his drunken comments to Morrigan so the other rogue's been sitting. ;)

My roommate beat the game with a rogue and I used Zervran in my party though out the game on my warrior and I beat the game.

Both of us are playing on the PC on normal. Rogues are not useless, its a matter of specing them correctly and using them right.

I run with PC mage, Alistar, Shale and morrigan. I simply go back to the area after its cleared for a quick run through with Lily to get all the passed chests. It takes a little extra time but her archery doesn't compare to Shale's dps/survivability.

Rogues are great for chests, of course, and dialouge, if the rogue happens to be you, but for combat, yeah, they could use some work. The problem isn't so much that they do poor damage, it's that just about all their damage is single target and Bioware has chosen to make just about all of the difficult battles in this game a fight against 20 average enemies, so CC becomes far more useful. Still, I take Leilana along, for the chests and the romance, and because I have a hatred for Morrigan and refuse to have her in my party.

I don't get why rogues are supposed to be weak in combat. You get access to the same powerful dual-wield tree as warriors, only you get backstabs too. Momentum + Backstab = the most powerful melee damage class in the game as far as I can tell.

Because you don't know how to spec/use them properly.

Properly specced and utilized in combat, rogues are amongt the deadliest characters.

I am currently playing a party with 2 rogues (the PC and Leliana), along with Alistair and Morrigan. We slice through mobs like a warm knife through butter--on Nightmare. Two backstabbing momentum rogues is very deadly. And where appropriate they open the battles with 2 simultaneous Arrows of Slaying from stealth = instant death for any yellow mob. There is nothing boring or underpowered about rogues. They are by far my favorite class in the game.

Wait you specced them both in both archery and dual wield ? Did you abuse the Ostagar bug or did you use the respec mod or what ?

Actually, rogues have enormous potential to be very powerful. I might even say more powerful than warriors and mages, at least against individual foes. I'd recommend playing as a rogue main character a little and seeing what it's like, because that helped me understand the class better. Leliana was always dying, when I was playing a warrior.

An archer character does enormous damage with Arrow of Slaying. If you have an assassin marking targets, the archer does even more damage. You'll almost forget why you needed a warrior or a mage in some fights.

As for archery/dual wielding, you can focus your talent points toward arrow of slaying and momentum.  There are also books of physical training which net you more talent points.

By the end of the game on my rogue, my rogue had all rogue talents, all duelist and assassin talents, and two archery talents.

Use rogues some of the time. They are worthless in combat, always the first to die.

But Leliana got better with her final bard song. She just stands by Morrigan and acts like a shield with her song.

You have to micromanage rogues. You have to trust them in order to use them properly. A full spec archery does a ton more damage than any melee fighter or spellcaster, and a melee rogue puts down targets efficiently when treated right.

Rogues are very useful if only for stealing and picking locks - I hate walking by things I should be able to get into. However, they are also not slouches in combat, as many have pointed out. They do require a bit more finesse, however, and if you do not want to put the effort in to exploit their talents then they will appear quite weak.

Rogues are a waste unless you play them as main character. They are deadly when rightly positioned. If left at free will they have no other use than a light version of dual wield warrior with the posibility of chest unlocks.

I found it rather easy to make an awesome rogue. Thanks to the Fade stat boost and books, you can make a 30 (24+6 item bonus) coercion + lvl 4 locks and not gimp yourself.

Go full wit dual wield, assasin and duelist. 2 tier 7 weapons and things go down in seconds. Mark of dead, debuffs, evasion, poisons... too much goodies for a single melee toon.

I have to agree. I'm using the exact same setup, 2 rogues, Alistair and Morrigan. Rogues do devastating damage. My favorite class as well.

I've use Leliana my whole playthrough so far, and I don't really know why. I had no intentions of romancing her this round, yet I kept her around instead of using somebody else.

I just played through the game (really feel empty about the ending btw) with a dualwielding Elf Rouge as my PC - Sten, Shale and Wynne as my other teammates. And yes, survivability in big aoe fights is shiet. But when it comes to turn the weight of a battle no other class is better than rouge. Try putting out 14 fire traps in a room before you go to battle (ofc this is in "no cutscene" battles only) and you wont even have to fight at all. Or stealthing in and taking out that ****ty mage who pumps your teammates with AoE as soon as you enter the room. It's awesome!

As I said before, I also only played with a melee + healer party. Singletargeting works really good for the most part, you can bash down almost anything with a few hits -going on the major spellcasters in the beginning wins you the battle just as easily if you would have had morrigan pumping out blizzards and cone of colds to all around the place (ok maybe not as easy but its definetly more challenging AND fun).

Discard all the comments about rouges being weak. They are AWESOME simply put.
