All that Remains (complaint)

And they start cracking jokes.
I'm not talking about regular banter, but little cutscenes as we head through the foundry.
Seriously? My mother has been kidnapped by a serial killing and these guys are being funny?
Okay, Merrill I understand, as her joke ('Ooooh, that's a pretty shrine.') can be written off as a momentary lapse in situational awareness, but it seemed out of character for the other two to be that inconsiderate of Hawke's feelings.

I don´t think Merrill is trying to joke, I think she´s simply not really aware of the very serious crap Hawke is facing. I really haven´t found many moments were Merrill tries to joke on purpose.
She does react, but it´s brutally bugged and it´s one of those that ****ed up the whole narration for me.LobselVith8 wrote...
Reminds me of when characters decide
to discuss things right when we are going to engage in a fight to the
death. I heard someone make a skmilar complaint about Merrill having a
discuss right after the Dalish clan was wiped out that completely
ignored their deaths. Would taking the blood magic ritual route have
avoided that banter?

Seriously though, is it that bad? I haven't taken them there yet, so I wouldn't know, what exactly do they say?

The Merrill conversations are bugged. After I killed everyone in her clan, we returned to Sundermount and she complained about them all still being there after 6 years. At the beginning of Act 3, I went into her house and she was sobbing over their deaths.
Actually, when you do Merrill's last quest, the companion banters going up Sundermount are all touching. It's obvious they're afraid of losing her. It adds to the mood instead of contrasting uncomfortably with it.
I have no problem with Isabela making an apostitutes joke after I slit the throat of the Exotic Wonder from the East. We kill blood mages all the time.Nodscouter wrote...
Varric and Isabela cracking jokes and being untactful? Never heard of that before.
My problem is --
1. It hurts the mood. It's difficult to remain emotionally engaged when my companions are cracking jokes.
2. Sure, they make jokes, but I have trouble seeing them as making jokes in this particular situation.

Anders also says something like "Wonder if we'll find more than a bag of bones this time", which felt woefully inappropriate when looking for my PC's mum... Kinda wanted to tell him to shut up.
LOL, I know. I could only imagine the slow death glare Hawke gave him at that point.
"Yeah. Yeah, I do hope we find more. Like maybe my kidnapped mother, alive and unharmed. Or did you forget that part?!"

It could have been nice to have Hawke auto-dialog based on his dominant tone, basically telling them to shut the hell up. I think this would be a reasonable response regardless of tone, in this particular situation.
I agree.
I got pretty pissed off when Anders piped up with "I wonder if we'll find more than a bag of body part this time?" in a humorous tone.

On that note, can I please have a "swift kick to the balls" renegade interrupt for carvers "and last time trouble came after you, it found mother"? :|

Blame the testers, apparently they all felt they'd failed the quest if she ended up dying so they changed it so that no matter what you do she dies.
I still can't decide if that was a genius move or just plain evil - a bit of both methinks ^^
As for the joking around, I always have Merrill and Isabela with me, the last party member depending on my mood at the time. I just took it as Isabela trying to lighten the mood and Merril being, well, Merrill.

I mean I love Isabela and Varric but come ON. We just found the remains of a brutally murdered woman. Ok so we loot corpses all the time ... ahem .... but I felt they were rather tactless in that moment.

It does seem inappropriate but perhaps it was ment to lighten the mood because of the situation's intensity? I don't really know.

Right! Where was the "Smack him" option at this point. Aren't these suppose to be Hawke's friends for 3 years by this point? I would have liked to have heard "don't worry we'll find her." or "Just wait until we get our hands on the bastard Hawke." A "noone takes Leandra and gets away with it!" would have been nice. The jokes mess up the seriousness and the emotional weight of the situation.

I agree. Whoever wrote the companion dialogue for that mission probably heard that mommy Hawke was turned into Frankenstein's Monster, and then just decided to go roll out with some jokes, because it's not like this quest is salvageable with decent companion dialogue with a pay-off like that.Maria Caliban wrote...

Though these things can also happen semi-unintentionally; during the combat with that blood mage at the end of the quest I've had Isabella using her "I'll make you cry for your mother" combat taunt. classy, Bella, really classy.

...Oh yes, I had something like that. When Merrill was all upset, I managed to talk the Dalish out of attacking us.. And the moment we get out of the camp she just goes on about Fenris and his sister. I mean, what?
Sadly that's just one of the flaws in the way the game is made... Although sometimes funny, it tends to throw you out of the story every now and then annoyingly enough.
