The first time I played the quest, I thought they just had a chat in there to explain what was going on... is that my naive mind at work again?

I vote for Captain Kylon of Denerim.
Nobody has quite done such a good job of sucking up to me as he did. We need more characters who live in awe of the hero's omnipotence.

They're just to lazy to do anything about it. Not every City Guard takes the job as serious as the Imperial Guard from Oblivion. "STOP RIGHT THERE, CRIMINAL SCUM! Oh... sorry Captain... Guardsmen Donnic... ähem... just removing this voyeur from your door."

Actually, Hawke was doing Aveline a favor by being there. It would have been much worse if, say, Guardsman Brennan listened in instead.

Basically, he's one underpaid, amused doorman.

I don't think he proposed on the spot, I figured they got engaged and then married during the 3 years between Act 2 and 3. I just wondered about this, because you can talk to Brennan immediately after the cutscene and she says something like 'So Donnic beds the Captain and blah blah..' but I guess that's not really evidence enough. It's not like SHE was the one listening at the door, anyhow.
