I played a mage, and sympathyzed with the character very much. The whole "I am you..." line during his rescue was what did it for me, I suspect.

So I set him free, and he went to Tevinter. And even wrote to Hawke once there.

Thing is. As idealistic and good intended that decision was, I find myself wondering if it wouldn't have been better to kill him in the Fade. (Letting the demons posess him would probably be even worse than sending him off to Tevinter, but that could be argued).

With Fenryel's special gift, he has potential to become a very strong magister, and with Tevinter practices... well, I just have my doubts he'll remain an innocent for long. After all, when in Rome...

Curious what the others think on the character :).

I doubt we'll ever hear from him again.

He doesn't seem very important. Especially with the option of, well, "Tranquilizing" him. Guess you'll always wonder ;)

Feynriel was Dalish and Antivan, my favorites! He was also "Somniari", which so far seems to be the most powerful magic that one is born with (aside from being born with an OG's soul). So I would love to see him impregnate a Saarebas. The child would be unstoppable.

The first run through I totally messed up in the Fade, so Feynriel ended up begging me to make him tranquil and so I killed him in the Fade. Afterwards I felt absolutely awful even though the Keeper said I had done the right thing and I didn't even get to discover that his Mum eventually commits suicide as a result of my actions (which the Wiki says she does), so that Hawke was on a big guilt trip and when Fenris (still in rival mode) chewed her out about taking him into the Fade, she didn't resent it at all - she felt she deserved it. It seemed wrong making Feynriel tranquil over something he might potentially do in the future, even though he had requested it. As his mother had said at the beginning, this was why he was afraid to go to the Circle. However, Hawke thought her first mistake was sending him to the Dalish and that maybe the Circle could have helped.

So next run through Hawke initially sends him to the Circle, because I thought they might be able to help him better than the Dalish - after all the Keeper wasn't able to stop Merrill turning to blood magic and consorting with a demon. But the end result was the same, I still had to go into the Fade, but this time I managed to help him overcome his fears and I sent him off to Tevinter. Like the OP, I did wonder about the wisdom of doing this. I had no worries about him being badly treated because they would recognise his potential and nurture it, unless of course he refused to do something because it went against his conscience but then a dreamer is probably better placed to deal with threats than most since he can just walk into their dreams and kill them. I liked to think that his letter hinted that he would not misuse his powers - after all he even admits that he can now see where the Templars are coming from, but the general theme seems to be no mage is immune to temptation. He certainly seems to have a wide range of influence as that girl seems to think he saved her by attacking her captors on the Wounded Coast when he was in Tevinter, which is worrying if he should go bad.

At the end of the day it comes back to the whole theme of DA2 - should mages be locked away/made tranquil because of their potential to cause harm or should they have the same rights as everyone else, to be able to walk free until they do?

Gonna have to agree with that.

Anyway! Since Feynriel writes about how disturbed he is by his fellow magisters and how he understands the templars in Kirkwall, I think Feynriel is going to turn out all right, so long as he remembers that discomfort as well as his heritage. Wouldn't do for a Dalish to turn into the exact sort of person that destroyed his people's homeland and enslaved them, after all.

I never liked sending him to either the circle or the dalish, in the circle he's uncomfortable but sending him to a bunch of hypocrites always annoyed me too.

If he goes to Tevinter he totally hooks up with Connor and becomes an apprentice. He sends you a hopeful letter from Tevinter saying he is learning control.

If he is tranquilized he no doubt just hangs around the circle. If he goes to the circle they eventually send him off to Tevinter anyways. If he goes to the Dalish it's only temporary and he goes to Tevinter or Tranquil land or dead if he actually becomes an abomination.

For each of my playthroughs, I looked at him as someone who might help Hawke someday or at least get me approval points from my team.
