Is the dexterity hotfix really "official"...?

A lot of people are urging me to get the dexterity hotfix.  I just don't like changing the official and intented rules.  They say that the dexterity issue is an actual bug and that Bioware will release a patch that does what the hotfix does...  But that they haven't yet.

Is this right?

The dexterity bug is acknowledged by the bioware team.

The hotfix is not official.

They definitily get stronger with the hotfix, but the game is too easy anyway, so I enjoy the small damage boost Leliana gets.

It's official in the sense that it was released by a developer at Bioware and will likely be included (at least most of its changes anyways) in a future patch. It is unsupported though, meaning if it breaks your game (it doesn't, I use it) you can't complain to Bioware about it.

My PC is a rogue archer who uses shortbows and the patch makes a world of difference. The difficulty increase is not game breaking by any means, and as abr4 said it is actually provides a nice little bump in difficulty at the normal setting.

It's work in progress. There is aim to improve archery in next patch and fix a few bugs related to it. Hotfix is just early phase of that, which will still need fine tuning, until in some form gets included in final patch.

Has anyone used the hotfix to play on hard? Just wondering how much it alters the ranged enemies. I don't have any issues with the difficulty as is so I might use the version without the ranged tweaks (or wait for an official patch).

I'm playing at hard with the hotfix, and doing fine so far. It's mostly a matter of making better use of cover. :)

I'd like to get this hotfix... But I don't like the idea of playing the game as it was not intended to be.

You won't - it fixes a bug and a few balance issues with archery, and will be included in a future official patch.

The game was intended to be played with maximum enjoyment by the user. If you think you'd enjoy the game with the dexterity hotfix, get it.

it is playing it the way it was intended. If you scroll over your stats Dex is suppose to increase damage for piercign weapons which are bows, crossbows and daggers. However, the game launched with a bug that did not provide the dex effect. The hotfix does. However, the devs feel that it increases the difficulty of easy and normal higher than they intended and they said they would look into adjusting the effects it has on the mobs.
This hotfix goes in your override folder when the game is patched you just open that folder up and remove this hotfix. Otherwise you will have the effect not only of the patch but this fix stacking on it.

P.S.  I think part of why we see all the threads about rogues not being usefull in the game has to do with the people who are not using the hotfix and thus taking a hit on the effects of dex on rogues

Exactly.

Also the game in its current state is not working as intended. It is intended that you get the bonus out of dexterity.

...it was linked already, twice. It's at the missing manual site (which is run by a dev, I think - the one who wrote this, in fact).

The hotfix is being worked on by the dev team's technical lead, and he has stated that when they get everything balanced and tested it will be included in an official patch. The hotfix is there so the community can help test and provide feedback. After that it will have to go through testing and QA, so it'll probably be a while before it shows up in any kind of official update.

Their major problem is balancing encounters, since it's a global change.
