Playing this game on Hard is just plain aggravating. I want to punch a wall whenever I get tossed to the ground and that happens at least 6 to 10 times a fight, minimum. I went into the playthrough on my rogue happy, believing that the ring called Etched Ring of Twins would help, because it makes your character immune to knockbacks but I would say its pretty much useless because mobs appear to knockdown more than they do knockback. I find that in every encounter I have, at least one person will chain knockdown my rogue. In the majority of the encounters I have, most of the enemies have the knockdown capability and they just sit there spamming whatever abilities they can that keep me down. I will be half way towards standing up when I will get shoved back to the ground and there is nothing I can do to stop it. Over and over and OVER again. I even thought having an adequate tank would help but there are so many fights with 7+ enemies, its impossible to have your tank tank them all.
Are there any tips or tricks to use when dealing with this short of having to respec into anything? It basically takes the fun out of playing on hard/nightmare because they are not challenging to me, they just really ****** me off with that. I mean, come on, every damn enemy does it. Shades, carta's, templars, everything its just so frustrating.
Knockdown is ridiculous...

Tips? If you keep getting knocked over by melee enemies, there's usually a very slight window where you can move out of their next attack when you get back up. So abuse kiting whenever you can. But on harder difficulties you need to rely more on allies to help others getting stunlocked. If one party member is getting locked down, switch to those enemies immediately and taunt them off or throw up a petrify or glyph of paralysis.
Just wait until you get to the wasp spiders. The poison spit is like 5 sec stun and they cast it every 1-2 secs.

Right now I am doing the quest Offered and Lost, trying to kill Ser Varnell and his fanatics. There are literally 16 of them, and once about 5 are dead, 10 more respawn and they all use knockdown and so all of my characters, besides Aveline because she is immune, are getting knocked down so its basically impossible to do anything. Its making me want to cut myself >_>.

I wouldn't mind it so much if we could do the same thing to enemies. But yea you are kind of forced to kite and stay away at times.
I've gotten trapped by enemies in corners and just get pummeled with no way out. Archers are the worse. They lock you down in the middle of nowhere and their arrows like to travel around corners at times.
Edit:
If you can take your entire group and fall back. Then focus your entire party on one apponent at a time. Other than that CCCs will help make quick kills or lock them down with cc giving you extra time. If they seem to be targeting a mage or weaker apponent just kite around.

It sucks to be a melee rogue in this game.At least, looking at isabella and varric(he is an archer, but the same thing happen to him). I wouldnt even play as a mage without the force mage spec and the 100 fortitude upgrade.
And defense from cunning seems to be worthless even on hard.

But seriously, I feel your pain on this one.
The best advice I can give is that you need another tank.
This game throws so many enemies at you that a second tanks is a necessity after Normal.
Many of Aveline's damage reducing abilities can be found on Fenris, not to mention he has a big sword for some good DPS. Since he won't gather as much agro as Avelinee, yet more than any one else in your party, he'll just pick up the stragglers that fall off of Aveline, leaving you to then camp near Fenris an pick off his weakest assaulters before they have a real chancee to do too much damage to him.
Merrill is also a good tank as Mages gather agro very fast when they can spam spells and since Merril can use blood magic she can do just that better than anyone. Since she uses blood magic, all her attribute points should be placed in Constitution rather than Willpower giving her the ability to have just as much health as Aveline and what's left of her mana can be allocated to sustained defensive abulities like Rock Armor and fully upgraded Arcane Shield, giving not only giving Merrill the ability to take quite a bit of punishment, but protecting the rest of your party as well. Then as she gets swamped, Wrath of the Elven saps health from all her attackers to heal her and then she has Entrench for good measure.
Try out one of them in your party to see what works for you.

have amss aoes, a tank and a healer.run around in circles using your healer. i ended up doing that keeping a lot of potions on aveline eventually she wore them down enough but i ended up using bout 15 potions since it ended up 1 v1 against ser varnell. so it took a whileCole of Sera wrote...

I usually have Merrill but I switched her out for Sebastion during this quest for his friendship >_>.

I think knockback resistance is bugged, at least on nightmare.
I have knockback resistance upgrade on my warrior and he's still getting knocked back on hits when I try that nexus Golem fight.
