After installing Mass Effect 1 to the 360 hard drive, playing the game produces a noise from the disc tray that drowns out other sound, to the point where the console sounds like a leaf-blower. No other game does this, only this one particular disc. Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, no improvement. Disc surface is pristine, no dirt or scratches. Disc tray itself also clean.
Any advice on making this game as quiet as all others?

Sounds like the disc is either slightly mis-shaped, or the central hole isnt quite in the centre. If itsa recent purchase, take it back to your retailer and ask for a replacement disk. If its an old disk you had lying around, then it sounds like age/heat has warped it, and nothing can be done.
