KotOR III needs to happen.

Playing Dragon Age: Origins for the first time instantly reminded me of its d20 predecessor, and now with the evolved and (in my opinion) improved combat of Dragon Age II, the idea of another KotOR sequel gets me exceptionally antsy for a third installment of Star Wars' popular rpg series.
Who wouldn't want to swing lightsabers around as a custom-made Jedi in the real-time combat system of Dragon Age II? Feel free to disagree, but I would love this game....
Yes, MMO players will soon get their hands on The Old Republic, and while I'm sure many gamers are anticipating its release, is this really the game fans of KotOR want to play? Or better yet, is this something they want to pay for on a monthly basis?
The beauty of RPGs like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Knights of the Old Republic is that we can play them by ourselves and even effect events of the story as we see fit. And the best part: We only have to pay once for it.
In regards to E3, 2011 seems to me like the year where anything can happen. Last year, we knew we were going to seeHalo: Reach, Fable III, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Kinect, the 3DS, etc. It was only a matter of actually getting to see it first-hand. Blessed with the oppotunity to attend again this year, I don't (yet) have any idea what to expect ... and I'm excited about that.
Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was, to me, proof that our favorite games may still see the sequels they deserve. Here's to hoping for a KotOR III.

I, personally, don't know the reason, but I agree with this post. There's likely a reason why they haven't, though. Who knows, really? They haven't hinted (as far as I'm aware) to another KotOR game (aside from the mmo). They probably have their hands full, but once ME3's released, who knows?

It's not a 'probably'. Neither BioWare nor Obsidian have any rights to do with the KotOR series, beyond BioWare owning the engine it uses.Music Man 07 wrote...
I realize the development of a Knights of the Old Republic III probably lies more in the hands of LucasArts than it does BioWare or Obsidian Entertainment, but SOMEBODY is sitting on an goldmine ... and doing nothing about it (as far as we know).
KotOR 3 would not be like KotOR 1 or 2 if it was made today. It would likely be, as said above, a more action-based game or an MMO. Oh, yeah, TOR...

Oh man nostalgia. I agree with you. The Star wars universe have such a untapped potential. I remember the times when I couldn't wait for Kotor 3. It's still one of the best series I've played. Want an ending to Revans story.
I think someday it will be done. Hope Bioware gets the right to do it.

ME ain't an RPG. It's an Action game with RPG elements. Buying gear, improving stats and having levels don't make a game an RPG, those are just different ways of handing out power-ups instead of picking up shiny coins or equipment packs in the game. It's marketed as an "Action RPG" but that don't make it so. Don't know about the rest but since they never pinged on my radar I assume they're also "Action RPGs" - a mythical creature in my world view.

Fallout - Depends (P.S. How can you not know Fallout?):
Fallout 1+2 - TBRPG
Fallout Tactics - Squad-Based Tactical RPG (Turn Based or Real Time)
Fallout 3 + New Vegas - TPSRPG/FPSRPG
Fable - Action RPG
Kingdom Hearts - JRPG

Mass Effect allowed me to "role play" and effect the story of the game in more ways than most traditional rpgs ever have, and trust me ... I've played a lot. True, they simplified the statistics and micro-managing (if there was any) in that game, but that's mostly because that's what we asked for.
The dialogue and connections made between the characters in Mass Effect 2 are out-of-this-world amazing. If you didn't get a role-playing fix out of this, I don't know what will satisfy you.

You're making the mistake of assuming my preference for DA2's real-time combat means that I don't want an rpg. Tell that to the Fallout, Fable, and Kingdom Hearts series.
By your choice of examples it's evident you don't want RPG.
Fallout 3 - biggest abomination in history of rpg games.
Fable - 1 was rpg lite, 2 and 3 are nothing more than fantasy sims simulator
KH- jRPG with action combat and no choices and consequences.
If kotor 3 was supposed to look like those games I'm happy they are not making it.

I'm sensing some exceptionally unnecessary hatin' up in here, so let me clarify something ...
I would love a KotOR III. period. If they changed absolutely nothing from the first 2 games, and we were still using the d20 system, I would buy it in a heartbeat. I just don't want to play an mmo.
good grief, guys ...

1. It's not BioWare's decision.MAUK wrote...
2nd Bioware should release Old Republic on ps3 like Sony did with DCUO.
2. MMOs have, historically, not had much success on consoles. TOR would likely be no different and considering the cost of porting and sustaining a PS3 version would far outweigh the 'benefits'
3. LucasArts are not Sony.

Take the action out and you have an rpg from 1995. Welcome to the new millenium Meta get used to it!
So you agree that they are action games. Why not just call a spade a spade? They should be proudly hailed as the best Action games in recent times, why should they dress in RPG drag?

Thanks for the list. Yes I managed to miss Fallout, yes I know it's a crime.

There's a difference between playing a role and a Role Playing Game. This seems to be the gap that marketers are slipping through. When you play Devil May Cry you're playing Dante but you're not playing a RPG. When you play HALO you're playing the MC but you're not playing an RPG. Being able to affect outcomes and having great characters to interact with is good writing and good game design but that doesn't make a game an RPG, it just makes it a game with a branching story. Cineware games use to do that all the time, so did the space combat sim Colony Wars. Even with a fighter like Street Fighter, if you beat Ken in the first round, you don't fight him in the 4th, that's "affecting the outcome of the story" if you consider each playthrough a new Street Fighter "story" based on whichever character you're playing at the time but it doesn't make it an RPG. I'd love to see more branching storys in all genres, but don't call it a RPG if you put that feature in the game. Just call it good content.
Since I'm getting way off topic I'll just say that you have to convince Lucas Arts for a new Kotor, not Bioware. You'd be better off posting at LA forums.
