For ME2's part, it never reached the heights of ME1's endgame but four of my five favorite missions are found in the sequel. And it does a much better job (imo, imo) of fleshing out the universe. I also prefer its cast overall and I find the writing is typically more crisp, even if the main antagonist of the game is nothing compared to Saren.
It might just be all the UNC missions I went after so soon into getting the Normandy under my command, but I didn't feel like ME1's plot was much to brag about until Virmire. At that point, yeah, I stood corrected -- gladly. But I didn't think it was anything more than decent until the pieces started coming together.
ME2's overall plot was definitely inferior but all that beautiful world-building blew me away. I felt like I knew the universe a lot more personally. And I agree that there needed to be a lot more squad interaction; that is one major thing I hope ME3 addresses.
