Ah its okay this thread has reached over 40 pages so I dont expect everyone to read the whole thing.Righteousham wrote...
I freely admit to not having read the entirety of this thread, as such what I miss has probably been mentioned before so if I am beating a dead horse here I do apologize. Primary I found myself missing the sense of grandeur the ME1 universe provided. I remember people being quite vocal about the boring planet design as well as the Mako's unreliable controls, but I don't recall many people demanding those features be removed completely. In fact, I remember many threads detailing ways in which both of those aspects could be improved.
Secondly, weapon mods and having an inventory. Both of these aspects of ME gave it more of an RPG feel and while both of these features of the game definitely needed refining, I don't recall many people asking for them to be cut out of the sequal. Just my two cents.
Edited for a tiny grammer mistake.

I'm not sure how having same sex romances changes a series.....but I do agree that I'm less than enthusastic at how different the Mass effect series is now compared to how it was with ME1.colossus50000 wrote...
This series is looking worse for me. ME3 now has same sex romances, what has happened to my mass effect 1, where did awesome story and rpg go. now this game is here to pander to the masses and not the people who loved ME1. This isnt my favorite series anymore, it really isnt.

Yeah I miss it the most too. The music and all of the atmosphere was amazing.
When I was playing the Collector Ship mission for the first time I was like "Wait am I playing Mass effect or a Dead space rip off?".
Sure at times ME2 feels distinctly retro (Like Arrival) but most of the time it felt too "Actiony" for my taste. I mean you just need to go onto ME1's website and you'll see at how different the art style is between each games.
At times it feels like atmosphere-wise ME2 is trying to be too many things at once IMO. Cyber punk(Omega and the Wards),

I miss an engaging, well structured plot.
I miss characters being designed to fit in the story, make sense and not be just fan service.
I miss a galaxy not littered with cameos.
I miss soldiers looking and dressing like soldiers.
I miss paragon/renegade system giving points based on your actions instead of words.
I miss Presidium.
and
I miss Shepard's character development. While Mass Effect didn't have a lot of it, it had a lot more than the second one.

Mass Effect 1 felt like much more than a game. It was a way to experience our very own space odyssey when we will never have the chance. It was epic, it was powerful, it had meaning. It was totally possible to sit back and just take it all in. You know when you finish an especially engaging book, you wish that it just wouldn't end? That the story would go on? I don't really know how, but Mass Effect 1 did this whereas Mass Effect 2 didn't. In ME1, Bioware created a whole new universe and a superb adventure to literally get lost in. But ME2 was just another game. If ME2 did the very same thing I wouldn't have cared if the interface was reduced down to one button. But it didn't. So please... bring back the sense of wonder Bioware. Stir my imagination.

Your exaggerations are exaggerating. The Mako had its ups and downs, the physics engine saw to that, excessively so.
XD
The issues are still there for me, exaggerated or not.
Anyway, another thing I miss... Sovereign had an awesome voice.
Harbinger just sounded awful, no bad on the VA - it's the excessive deepness in how the voice was modulated... understandably they couldn't give it the same texture Sovereign's voice had to avoid spoiling it when it was assuming control early game, though... hopefully Reapers in ME3 will have cool voices again.

All of this, the plot especially, and the feel/sheer sence of scale, the characters, Ash(disjointed as she may have been) being a mentor more than a team mate, and that music, you know the song:Harmless Crunch wrote...

Your massive enviroments
Your 80s/Techno style Sci-Fi
Your costumisation
Your intresting villians
Your deep and twisting plot
Your godly music
Walking up on deck, the intense close-up, this is where a man like Hideo Kojima shines, he really knows how to treat the old fans, i mean walking seeing Shadow Moses in mgs4, hearing "the best is yet to come" slowly arise in the background, i have to admit i got a little misty eyed thinking about the 90ies. Hopefully Casey Hudson has something similar for us who have been there since day1.

I second that... man, that hammerhead is the worst vehicle ever. how can it not have a zoom function. no love for the snipers in ME2, that's for sure.<_<

free exploration and environment size (the Citadel only has 4 floors in ME2... that's really bad)
possibility to reach level 60
increased game difficulty rewards
character progression that made me feel powerful at higher levels
the possibility to use biotics even through shields
plenty of weapons and armors selections
the Spectre Gear (I really miss this equipment)

I don't know, but you guys seem quite serious about your agenda. Therefore I would recommend you to make one big list of the things that you miss, put it in the OP and say hey these are the things from ME 1, that we miss. It would be much easier to analyze those things. You can add remove the ideas from it depending on the develpment of discussion here.
Now I am pretty sure that somebody has already proposed this but I am not going to verify it because the thread is too large. [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/joyful.png[/smilie]

I agree completely. This is what Bioware is really good at. This is what made Torment, the BG series, and others - including ME1 - so incredible. While ME2 is a great game, it lacks that same magic.
Personally, I thinks it was due to complying with the demand for a more pure shooter-shooter game. All reasons aside, ME2 has a LOT more in common with Gears of War, Call of Duty, etc. than Bioware's previous masterpieces. It's a FPS world now!

I just took the Hammerhead for a hover in Overlord on Insanity... tried to get the data packages...
I can honestly say now that without exaggeration that one bullet is enough to make the alarms go up, and one second of not even taking the full fire of a turret (moving sideways/falling to make it actually look like all bullets are missing me) sets it in flames.
Yes, I said the bullets were going past me... not hitting me... well that's how it was animated in the game. At most maybe a peripheral bullet or so would have hit me every few moments, but that should definitely not be enough to set it on fire in under one second.
When you have to find some cover, and bounce up, fire 3 missiles while falling, and repeat... it's just ridiculous... they had the perfect set-up with Turrets v Mako in Bring Down the Sky, especially that last battle where you have to expose yourself to all turrets before they slide their protections down, while turrets start popping out on slide-rails all around you... that was actually fun on Insanity and it felt like an accomplishment when the last turret blew up.
The Hammerhead wouldn't stand a chance in that situation... not a damn chance...

Yeah, and at least with the Mako we could actually explore a planet and look at the landscapes/nightsky or something. Some were truly great. The Hammerheart only granted us limited arcadey canyon action. Not exactly a good option. As the very tedious planet scanning...CajNatalie wrote...

Hmm I think it helped a lot too. Noveria wouldn't have had any where near the same amount of personallity were it not for the stunning retro music......places like Ilium feel...empty in comparison.....Fredvdp wrote...
I think that adding music to hub worlds would help a lot. If the Normandy has similar music to the SR-1 that would definitely benefit the atmosphere.
