Any tips?

Mostly Nightmare is a good challenge, but anytime one of these commander fsckers shows up it gets very tedious. Add an Assassin for extra frustration. The high HP + many pots design of these mobs means the "CC &  Burn down high value targets immediately" tactic just doesn't work before you get decent damage output. Rest of party is Varric, Merril, Anders, concentrating on CC, aggro, and survivability skills at this point. Merrill set up to exploit stagger only on Elites so the damage isn't wasted.

But unless I'm super organized at pause-micro for taking out all the trash as soon as they appear, it usually ends up just my 2H Warrior and dog still standing, endlessly kiting while I slowly chip away at the commander's health and watch him chug potions and toss out unavoidable stuns. Even if everyone is still alive it goes slowly. On several occasions when party is dead and I've run out of pots I just run back and forth slowly regenerating HP and stam while trying to keep the commander in range of dog's bite. Did someone at Bioware think this would be fun?

I was hoping to use minimal pausing, as 2H is great fun in hack'n'slash mode, and minimal-pausing mega-death-dealing 2H is easily doable on hard. PC could do with a cycle targets button, though.

In b4 l2p etc.

tl;dr any non tedious, non kiting approach to commanders at low level?

Are you killing commanders first? I'm not sure what the problem is. You'll probably have to pause and micro to beat them.

What's your party setup like? You might be able to make some changes to increase dps.

Problem is basically on low-level Nightmare their HP pool is so high relative to my damage output that taking them out first is never an option. They do not do much damage, but just won't die and don't stay CC'd for long. I have to take out the waves of mooks first or either Hawke or the rest of the party dies from a thousand cuts.

I guess I could respec the ranged to maximize damage and just ultra-micro and reload a lot when they die, but that doesn't sound like much fun either.

I'm finding these guys more annoying than the assassins. Assassin health is lower, so you can usually take the assassins out between two backstabs.

Talking about lvl 6-8, btw.

Hrmm. I had more problems with the assassins when I recently did act one without DLC items. What's your party setup like? You shouldn't have to chain crowd control the commanders. Leaving them for last is good. Make sure to spread out so no more than one person gets hit by their ranged stun How many mages do you have? Are they using staffs that work against the commander's elemental weakness?

Just sounds like you need to optimize your damage some more. Can you think of any tweaks? Nightmare is designed so your entire party is being played at an optimal level.
