I am planning on playing as mage for my second play through. Will it predictably force me to side with the mages in the end?

No you can totally be a pro-Templar mage with all the paradoxes it implies.

Yeah, being a mage is kind of weird in some respects. It sort of feels like you have some kind of mystical PC mantle that everyone can see so they're somehow not bothered by you exploding everything in the near vicinity with FIRE.
