Because Danarius had leveled up 5 times since then. He just didn't count on Hawke leveling up 20 times.

He probably didn't care to waste time. In Act I, he set a trap for Fenris, so he could reliably look for him. In Act II, Hadriana was sent to do all the annoying searching. In Act III, Danarius only went after Fenris after Varania reported his overtures. He didn't have to take the time to look.

After all, he was pretty quick to say that he was returning to Minrathous.
