Next Patch & Ports Question

However things have changed for me, as due to my own stupidity i allowed myself to be scammed by criminals.
As a result, i have had to improve my security on my computer. At the moment all ports are closed ( i paid a professional to do this and to check my computer and secure it).
I mentioned to my professional helper that it appeared that the game "Dragon Age 2 " really needed me to open a number of ports to get it to work (these are all listed in the section on self help for players who are unable to login).
TCP : 80 , 443 are the 2 ports that are concerning me most. Apparently it is dangerous to open any ports under 500. Also my professional said to me that he "knew of no good reason why a Game would need to open port 443" and that it was a particular vulnerability due to something to do with encryption, I cant remember now all he said.
Apparently that port 443 has a particular dedicated function that has nothing to do with games.
Well i am prepared to continue playing the game without further internet connection, and forgo my special game items, and my ability to upload my acheivements.
My question is can i download and install future game patchs without them opening my ports or not ?
It is strange i know that i have been clamouring with others for a fix to the "login problem", but now i dont feel safe enough to open any ports on my computer.
As always, a response from a Bioware representative would be most welcome, for some reason they have never addressed any of my concerns directly although i often post asking for a response from the people in charge.
Loving the game, nothing is stopping me from playing it. However, in the future i may prefer games i can just download and play off the disk, rather than involving all this uploading/ downloading / logging in and connection problems that are breaking the game for many people at the moment.

I think Bioware do a great job, and believe that they will sort out a lot of the issues soon.
Still enjoying the game. I am in Act3 now, and involved in a hard battle with a High Dragon.

Who told you that opening ports under 500 are dangerous, the person you hired?Fizzbangblade wrote...

If so, they honestly do not sound like they have any idea what they are on about.
It is perfectly safe to let DA2 access port 80 and 443 - port 80 is the HTTP port used to connect to any non-secure webserver (e.g. Google) and port 433 is the encrypted HTTPS (aka SSL) port used to connect to secure websites (e.g. Banks, PayPal, etc). Unless you open them you are simply not going to be able to login.
Many applications can make use of port 80 and/or 443, a common one that comes to mind is Skype.
TL;DR - Allow DA2 to access ports 80/433, it will not cause any harm what so ever.
Source: Personal experience as a both a support technician and system/server adminstrator.
Anyway, to answer your question - patches you will likely be able to install.
DLC you will not be able to use as it requires authorization and to get that you have to login to your EA account.

As pointed out above, there is absolutely nothing wrong with allowing a legitimate installation of DA2 to open connections to port 80 or port 443 on DA's servers.
Maker knows what your "professional helper" has done to "secure" the system though. Hopefully they were just the relatively harmless shyster type and not the malevolent miscreant type.
