I've had this problem for some time now, and its been bugging me.

Every time I play Mass Effect 2 (and I believe the same problem is with ME1), the textures are all completely screwed up. The way i've found to fix it is to do a roll back of my drivers to version 197.45 (nVidia drivers, graphics card = Ge Force 7800GS), as this is the only recent driver that seems to work and not screw around with the textures, any later one does.

However this is beginning to bug me, as there have been many new releases of drivers, my current being 267.24 beta, and works fine with every other game I own. Every time I want to play Mass Effect 1 or 2, I have to roll back to 197.45, which is about 5 drivers before, and have to re-install the latest one when I want to play a different game, such as DA2 or fallout.

I was wondering is anyone else having this problem? Or does anyone out there know of a fix, which doesn't mean rolling back to the earlier driver, as it doesn't give as much support as the latest drivers for the later games.

This is what I mean of the texture problem:

I'm afraid the only solution really is to roll back drivers Nvidia's newer drivers kinda screwed over older cards and you get issues like these in games.

The overall best solution would be to buy a newer Nvidia card

This is the situation, nVIDIA makes changes that BREAK what used to work; it's not the game's fault, it's careless at nVIDIA. Now, while it's easiest to go back a couple of years and not worry about it, there have been occasional Geforce drivers that aren't as useless where ME is concerned. I don't think that the 197.xx drivers are quite that old, for instance.

There have been ME2 game players who have tested multiple Geforce drivers and found several from among those in the past year or so that do work, but the best place to learn about it, if you are determined to hold onto such an ancient and obsolete graphics card, is on nVIDIA's own game forum.

The 197.45 drivers should be fine for any game on your card. Driver improvements towards raw performance are always made for more recent cards, and can sometimes handicap older cards. There is no benefit in running Fallout or Dragon Age II with the newest drivers on your card. I know the latest beta contains a fix for DAII, but IIRC that only applies if you are running the game in DirectX 11 mode. Your card is restricted to just DirectX 9.

I know the best solution would be to upgrade my graphics card, I know it is terribly old and does not compare in the slightest with the latest/newer ones out now. But that would mean doing a complete computer replacement, and I just don't have the money at the moment, but that would be the overall solution in the future.

I was hoping for a solution that didn't involve rolling back but it looks like the best option is to buy a new graphics card. Thanks for your responses!

This is exactly the same issue I've been having (7800GT, though). I don't mind a driver rollback, especially now that I know the correct driver to download. Thanks!

I have this issue now with the 7800 gt. Rolling back the drivers actually got rid of the problem, but after I had updated to the latest release beforehand, the screen just flickers and looks white or black intermittently. I can't get rid of it after removing all drivers and doing a driver clean... does this now mean I should go buy a new card?
