Well I've played Nightmare on DAO ages ago, and I remember it being fairly easy. It feels far harder in DA2 since EVERYTHING does friendly fire.

Means I have binned alot of the mage damage spells and them using mind blast. They are all specialised to healing, winter grasp and hexing. And staying alive, bloody hell assassins are annoying. And they steal your potions, I was wondering where they went.

So my current group is:
Avaline - Tank. Mostly sword and shield, battlemaster and guardian skills.
Varric - Goad, Armistace, Evade and his personal skills.
Bethany - Currently winters grasp, healing and hexing. Will use anders as dedicated healer later.

I am 2H warrior, so far reaver. I tried to run beserker, but hated having no stamina.

My main issue at the moment is lack of cross class combos. Its still early days at level 10, but 2H combos need brittle, and anders will be healing specialised. I cannot see many actions that take advantage of disorientate for my 2h warrior either, and avaline will likely have very little stamina to spare on combos.

Any advice?

Get Cleave/Claymore if you haven't already. Swap out Bethany for Anders, he has better healing capability and the primal/arcane trees for chain lighting + paralyzing prison to work off your staggers. Chain lightning doesn't have a friendly fire component.

Also, there's nothing wrong with going Reaver first, I did too. But as soon as you hit 14 pickup Beserk and at 15 pick up Barrage. You can toggle Beserker on and off to activate Barrage to conserve your stamina.  Also 2h warriors don't really need a tank, you're better off with 3 ranged teammates.  I suggest picking up Merrill or Sebastian in place of Aveline unless you really want her for the party chatter.

Drop Aveline (giants reach ff and you can tank with goad) and take Merrill and her chain lightning will compliment your sunder (stagger)

Check SabreSanDiego's thread for a cool 2H guide for NM.

You don't have to bin all the AoE spells from your mages, sure you have to micro-manage them a little bit, but Elemental Aegis and a couple of warding runes is all you need to be immune to Firestorm and Walking Bomb.

Yeah Avaline is getting annoying how I have to watch my abilities around her. I will swap to Merrill. How much constitution do you guys usually have in support characters? 20?

Ok I've been running as a vanguard now, with varric, merrill and anders. Going very well so far thanks.

Holy crap.. assassins steal your potions? Those sons of ****es... I wondered what happened when I had nearly 30 stockpiled and the next thing I know I'm down to half a dozen.

I just thought my companions went on a drinking binge.

Yeah I thought it was a bug, then googled it and someone said that assassins stole them when they backstabbed.

You get them back when you kill him, but its really irritating if you cannot pin him down long enough to kill him, so you get steadily killed by waves.

What I learned from switching to Nightmare from Hard: using Scythe as a way of quickly rescuing your squishies is... counterproductive. Though watching Anders explode was quite funny.

Yeah, my first time on nightmare I panicked when I got attacked by a massive wave and cast tempest in the middle of my party...........that did not end well.

Perhaps you mean firestorm or fireball? pretty sure tempest and other primal spells do not do friendly fire even on nightmare, which is one of the reasons primal mages are a goog choice on NM.

Nope did't have any of the fire line of spells yet, i am using one of the many spell altering mods though so that may of had some affect on things

Primal is the only tree completely clean of FF skills for Mages. Meaning it's usually the first choice for Mages and Mage companions on Nightmare difficulty.

As others have said, check the Vanguard guide. As for speccing Merrill, I'd say Primal + the Blood Mage side of her personal tree are the essentials. Since she doesn't need Willpower for equipment, you can do 60/40 Mag/Con for maximum Blood Mage-y goodness.
