Alright, I flirted with him in Act I, flirted with him again in Act II, gave him the book, did Questioning Beliefs (Act II), and made sure to gain rivalry with him. When I went to his specilization tree, his rivalry ability was unlocked...however, he still gained friendship points when I refused to cooperate with the Sloth Demon in Night Terrors.

Isn't he supposed to stop gaining friendship once I get his rivalry ability? Or is his rivalry just not 'locked' yet? If so, how do I know when it's locked? This is just driving me crazy, so I'd appreciate it if someone answered this.

No. Points stop when you max it. Reaching 50% gets you their ability.
