2 key things for fenris in your next play through with him.

Do bait and switch to get him to show up.

In act 2, bring him with you when you are traveling out of kirkwall to other locations. It will que an attack for him.

I almost didn't do the quest the first time because the quest giver talks about getting lyrium to the templars. Why would a pro-freedom mage want to do that?

So, easy to miss.

Well unlike ME2. You aren't required to recruit a certain amount of companions to continue on the story. Didn't someone post about not meeting Isabela as well? That the story still progresses without her in your party from act 1?

a)You need money to fund expedition!
b)Blackmail material
c)Possibility of earning templars' favor if at some point they'd need to be persuaded to look the other way

:)

And I am pretty sure you can play without Isabella. You'll miss some story and a great companion, as is with Fenris, but you can certainly do it.

The letter for Bait and Switch also doesn't appear right away. You have to go do something else first and then come back for it. Usually I do Aveline's first personal quest and then when I go back to the house the letter is there.

Sounds like you don't check your mail too often. The letter setting the quest turns up in Gamlen's house soon after you complete 'A Business Discussion'.

I missed him the first time because I didn't want to have anything to do with Lyrium smuggling, and it turned out to be the quest that recruits Fenris... would have been nice to know that ahead of time.

I could make up reasons or excuses that the game may or may not let me play out as well, but why should I, when I don't know there's a companion there?  It usually doesn't make sense to give ammo to the enemy, so I usually don't.

Preferably, the quest would've been presented as something a little more neutral, so that role-played characters who aren't keen on giving templars power-highs won't pass it up just because they were playing that role. Or something could hint that there's a potential companion there, so we don't skip it unknowingly.

Yeah, I have to agree with goldens. It's more than possible to earn enough gold to fund the expedition without compromising the character's principles. Isabella, Merril, Anders, Aveline are relatively neutral. Anders, however, is forced upon you because of his map. I wish I could've have "missed" him...

I think templars high on lyrium might be much more lenient than ones spoiling for a fix. From my point of view, smuggling lyrium helps mages.
