If you take Fenris with you the first time you meet with the Arishok, there is expanded dialogue and a really neat insight into both the qunari and Fenris. He speaks their language and understands their culture.

So how come he never mentions it again? I took him with me every time I talked to the qunari, and he never displayed this knowledge or talent again. What gives?

He does at other points in the game, too.  I don't know how much you've played so this could be a spoiler...

he'll request a duel on your behalf when you confront the Arishok at the end of act 2, for example.

The only other time he does it is during the final scene with the Arishok in Chapter 2 (iirc).

Why? Only the writer gods know for sure. It is a lovely piece of additional character insight for Fenris though.

Edit - Posted Image by Addai...but I'll leave it here for posterity

He had no need to bring it up when we weren't involved with qunari. He probably has a ton of hidden talents he doesn't talk about.

Yeah, I knew about the duel thing.

But you have at least 4 or 5 more conversations with the Arishok during Act 2, such as the Blackpowder Courtesy questline. During the first conversation in Act I, Fenris dominates the conversation, as he is most familiar with the proper responses and their culture. But during the rest of the conversations with the Arishok, he just hangs out to the side, completely mute, even when you put your foot in your mouth or otherwise muck things up. Why so silent, all of a sudden? He was all chatty the first time...

He was busy brooding. He does that.

They probably didn't want him to dominate every Arishok scene at the expense of the PC. Some people might think it's cool, others might get annoyed and want to be in charge of the conversation.

Well, that and choreograping dance routines, of course. :bandit:

Umm..something on topic...there is another scene too in "To Catch A Thief" where he shows some insight.  I don't want to spoil it for the OP if it hasn't been seen yet.

Okay, back to lurking about.

I fixed that by figuring that the quests didn't all take place on the same day, like they do when you're playing them. ;)  I think Fenris would've taken Hawke aside after the first meeting with the Arishok and done some 'splainin about how to deal with the Qunari without getting your head lopped off.

I haven't gotten to that quest on my "friends with Fenris" playthrough yet (although I have beaten the game twice now), so thanks for keeping the spoiler aside. :)

Another theory:  Fenris jumps in only when he feels it's necessary.  He may do it initially to break the ice because he thinks the Arishok would otherwise dismiss Hawke like he does most other non-Qunari.  Then at the end, he may brung up the duel to avoid unnecessary bloodshed.  Otherwise he leaves Hawke to it -- perhaps because he doesn't like to remember the time he spent with the Fog Warriors.

What do I have to do to get Fenris to step in for the Arishok duel? I can't NOT get the respect of the Arishok no matter how hard I try. I've tried lying to him at every turn, denying I killed his agents and whatnot, burned the bodies, and said the Qun sucks and he's still like, "basha lit'an, I will duel you." So I never get to see what Fenris says at the end of Act II. Please HELP

I believe that I've heard Fenris doesn't say it if Isabela is there.

Fenris was simply giving respect to the Arishok to show that those arriving were not enemies of the Qun. The Qunari tend to believe the outside world is uneducated, weak and inferior. He was simply giving one of the 3 leaders of the Qun the respect he is due. He simply stayed back after because it was Hawke who had been a part of the deal that the rest of the conversation is about.

btw, if you want to gain the respect of the Arishok it requires having Fenris there for the first conversation. Followed by Hawke saying they were to get a part of the future profits.

Fenris also would have recognized that it's not him but hawke who the Arishok is interested in. An Elf that already knows the Qun is just an educated outsider. The other strong person before the Arishok is the mystery and worth notice.

That's because the Arishok has a "growing lack of disgust" for Hawke and is willing to deal directly with you.

Regardless of even Fenris or Isabela being there. If you earned his respect, he'll challenge you to a duel. But that could be exclussive to his respect.

So if I want to see this little tidbit, then I have to make sure Isabela is not 50% with me either way by the end of Act II?

Just a note: he'll only propose the duel if the Arishok doesn't do it himself. So if you win the Arishok's respect over the course of the second and first acts, then he'll still stand there silently.

I know that the Arishok offers to duel me if I've earned his respect.  Now I want to know how I can avoid earning his respect just so I can see what Fenris says, since he supposedly intervenes at this juncture if I haven't earned the Arishok's respect on my own.

I don't think so. He called me basalit-an (don't remember how to spell it) and I was always diplomatic with him and Fenris still suggested the duel.

Of course, that could be because I played female, he had issues with that.

He didn't call you that because you didn't earn his respect is all. The Arishok doesn't apear to take notice of the sex of Hawke. Probably just because they didn't want to do another "This does not make sense" conversation. I'd have loved to have the Arishok doing that Sten dialogue. "But you are a woman!"

So how do I earn his DISrespect? Maybe by avoiding doing related quests altogether? But I'm a completionist..

Not true. I earned his respect with Fem!Hawke, and Fenris still brought up the duel, to which the Arishok says "Dude, I don't fight chicks." I still dueled him anyway. I am not sure if the offer stil stands if i dont bring Fen along though, he is part of my perma party.
