I wonder why we never have the option to invite Gamlen to live in hightown with us

He's family. Whether you like it or not, you're stuck with him. Just as Varric is stuck with Bartrand and Fenris is stuck with Varania. If you bring Varric along for Fenris' Act 3 companion quest, right as he's poised to murder her if you choose "Don't do this" Varric will chime in with something that has more truth to it than anything else.

Chastising a person, a part of your family, for their flaws is easy. Overlooking them and forgiving them is what ultimately makes a person.

I've never subscribed to that particular maxim.

Idiot family members who I can't stand can go rot in hell just like anyone else I can't stand.

Years ago, I would've said the same thing about family. But, things changed. The past is the past. Lamenting about mistakes that have already been done and cannot be fixed serves no one.

Now that's not to say there aren't people I can't stand and want to rot in hell. But family? Family is something else entirely.

Ok, I wouldn't invite him to live with me, but I *would* gift him with a few things to fix up his house, or help him move into a better neighborhood.

The big issue here is why Fenris, who is really very proper, doesn't fix up *his* confiscated mansion. He should. They could have done that for the 3rd act! If he can't live with me (which is a crime), he should have a nice house, and be just the sort to make you take off your shoes at the door.

My problem is that after 6 years, the same corpses are inside the house and they haven't even begun to rot. What the hell is Fenris doing inside that house?

They could have just updated it to the Happy Sunny Brothel model! Using 'damaged manor model' was a bit lazy - as well as out of character.

Also - ew.

I know right?
Damnit Fenris, I'll give you your own room to brood in if you want. You can use mother's room!

.... what, too soon?

I'm wondering if the thing you said ew about was the same thing that crossed my mind when I asked what the hell Fenris was doing in that house.

The objects we have and they way we have them arranged tell a lot about us. I guess it makes sense that Fenris lives as a squatter for a time, that reflects on his doubts of what´s next. However, getting the place repaired and nice should reflect how he has found a purpose and an aim for his life. Being cluless works for a time, not for 7 years.

Yeah this was one thing that always bugged me. I really would have expected him to move in whether Hawke liked it or not.

I thought it weird he wasn't in the house during Act 2 actually. Leandra even said when she spoke of trying to get the house back to Gamlen that they would have their home back. Like she would let him come along. So first playthrough I tried to find the door where he was hiding because I thought he'd be there somewhere. Then went back to the old place and he was there asking for coin.

Somehow the mansion felt too small to me compared to other states in the same area.

At any rate, the lack of interaction with the house itself (something like improving the Vigil in Awakening) felt dissapointing.

Decorating DLC go!  ;)

Not just decoration. Upgrading the Vigil had some nice consequences.

Personaly, I´d love something along the lines of the Crossroad Keep in NWN2.

Dude was a douche but he did open his shack to us when his long lost family came knocking on the gates, it only seems fair to return the favor. But who knows, maybe Gamlen has just enough pride left that he wouldn't want to give up having his own place.

This.

Shoot him a few sovereigns every now and then for a (ahem) bang-up night at the Blooming Rose, sure.  But Gamlen's a man who seems to value his independance.

Wouldn't recommend it, he's the kinda guy who'd peek through the key whole during Hawke-and-Anders funtime. Perverted old bastard.

Well, Anders' mind blast could kill two birds with one stone if that were the case, I bet!

Yeah I dont know why there isnt a dialogue for at least giving him some money, he did helped me out in the end and actions speak louder than words in my book, but then again he seems to spend every minute that he is not in his house in the blooming rose, so he must have some sort of retirement savings fund set up or something

It's possible Gamlen and your mom argued about this out of your hearing and came to some kind of decision without your input.

Plus having you and your mom around may put a crimp in his social life.

what social life? The man lives or lived (not sure which it would be after he says he's glad you're in the family) in a hovel and goes to a brothel, where women put up with him.

Frankly, I'm assuming with the Champion's mysterious departure, Gamlen was allowed by Hawke to live in the estate so long as he doesn't lose the title and fortune another time. Or he's just living there, but Charade is pulling the strings on the money flow so Gamlen doesn't try anything.

Beats me, I know people whose entire social life consists of watching porn at 3am until they get a bad case of sticky keyboard, but they still don't want to live with their relatives.

lol...oh dear.

On a serious note, if those dwarves who are basically "who are you again?" for Hawke can live in his/her house, the uncle might as well tag along too.

The estate was never his house.
