So almost all of Femshe's hairstyles look like some kind of plastic wig.

Example #1

Either she is a gel fan or Bioware never bothered to make good hairstyles for the female version of Shepard. I understand that it's not supposed to move, but why does it look so..... static? Here is one that looks great, yet does not move either (Saints Row 2).

See, videogame females can have good looking hair. I don't know what Bw was aiming for, but I can tolerate it in ME1, but the same problem is present in ME2.

Now these are good looking Femsheps (at least the 1st one is), but the hair is what kills the look. Male characters have good, non-plastic hairstyles to choose from.

Looks like my character.... but mine is better looking (way better looking). Although there is someone else in the Normandy crew does not have the same problem with hair like Femshep does.

Is it genetics or Bioware not caring to put some effort into it? Let's look at hairstyles from Dragon Age.

I don't know if they both use the same engine, but th difference isn't that staggering. If the DA team can pull it off, why can't the ME team?

I thought the ManShep hairstyles sucked pretty bad, too.

Why couldn't we have something like this?

Or this?

And why can't he have curly hair?

Military regulations? Possibly. But I still want to make a hot ManShep with curly or slicked back hair.  I can get a good-looking FemShep in five minutes.  ManShep?  Virtually impossible.

The wig look is partially due to the lack of an actual hairline texture on the scalp. Notice on the pony-tail/bun hairstyles that there is a hairline texture that connects the hair model to the scalp. This is missing on the longer hairstyles (but is there for Miranda's hair).

More options are always good. Honestly though I always felt femshep was more limited in her choices than male shep. All the male sheps look different, yet thanks to femsheps hairstyles most look the same.

Well I for one hope that they put quite a bit of effort into the options, both hair and face textures. If they created some decent textures for custom shepards, on par with the henchmen and default (male) shep, we would all be happy I think.

Default femshep REALLY needs to be fixed too.

Pretty please? :)

With  careful designing they could add a scalp texture that would work with all hairstyles.

I'm down with more hair choices. I'd also like to be able to change styles throughout the game. DA2 spoiled me.

DA 2 was the first Bioware game with Hair that I actually liked.

Fallout 3/NV did quite well too. You can change haristyles and there's a bunch of them. The colors squemes are also good.

I think it was the limitations of the engine that left us with the bad hair days. I can't remember where I read it but someone did say that the new Unreal engine that ME3 is using handles hair better.

That is exactly why all my Shepards are bald.

As much as this sounds silly. I don't like playing custom sheps cause the hairstyles annoy me to hell and back, I can't stand looking at the hairstyles for 20 hours

You'd think that when Cerberus put Shep back together they'd include the "good looking hair" gene. I guess the project just ran out of money by that point.

Some of the post apocolyptic mange styles were fum, and you had complete control on color. I often went with a mint green bihawk. The face creator was garbage though.

Yeah, hair in the game is pretty awful. I always go for the buzz cuts. The Kaidan texture for maleshep is pretty good if you mod that in but all the rest look plastic, as you said.

Hopefully the ME development team has learnt that the trick to making good videogame hair is to do it in layers ( makes it easier to animate and gives it sense of depth and movement ) instead of drawing a one-peice hair style and sticking it on someones head ( I don't know how to post images but anyone who has played Castlevania: Lord of Shadows probably knows what I am talking about since it has some of the best video game hair ever ).

It would be nice if this little probelm was fixed for ME3 although I doubt it has been.

it might not be bad in ME3, if they take anything they did graphically from DAII that is, DAII's hairstyles not only look pretty decent for most of them, but they also MOVE with wind and combat and such. But that's just my two-bits. and all of the preset faces for both male and femHawke were pretty good, only minor touches needed for personalization really.

Bald is beautiful.
My Femsheps are usually buzzed too, and named some derivative of Natalie Portman Shepard.

Unreal Engine cannot into hair, just face it. Still Admiral's examples could be done.

The hairs wouldn't bother me so much if the textures weren't so damn awful. They have this strange, almost metallic look to them. Blech.

Honestly, there are really only 3 hairstyles for males (bald, buzzed, and the short "Caesar" fringe) and 1 hairstyle for females (the sideways part) that look somewhat decent, not counting the 2 NPC-only female hairstyles that you can only use by hacking your save. The other ones, yes, all look either horribly pixelated and/or like they're made of plastic.

Still, with some editing and color tweaking, you can make the best of what you've got.

I would like to see improved/new hairstyles for ME3 though. DA2's alpha-blending alone would be welcome.

I say this a lot, but it just reinforces the point the CC needs an update

These hairstyles were crafted for Mass Effect which was released in 2007. So they we probably made and designed in 2006. Mass Effect 3 will be arrive by almost 2012. That around a six year period where Bioware have kept exactly the same style and texturing.

Hair really does need a massive update for ME3.

To be fair, the standard hairstyles did get a bit of an update in ME2. But it would be great if some flex could be added to any of the ones that should flow in ME3 (as flex was added to DA:O's hairstyles in DA2).

Blame UE3. I mean, I've seen the same complaint in Batman: AA. Just look at Harley Quinn's hair in there, Joker's too.

Agreed.  This is about the only DA2 style improvement I'd welcome in ME3*.
