If you read the PDF I linked it seems they deal with a lot of EA's emails - distribution of EA's newsletters, transactional emails, registration emails etc. - a snippet:

[...]

Many large corporations use third parties for newsletter etc. distribution as it's much easier for them to let someone else deal with the hassle of email distribution issues than to deal with it in-house.

My comment was just based on a perusal of the (legit) email headers, all of which seem to come directly from EA themselves: I was half expecting to see this other company's domain name there, but the various noticifactions, newsletters and so on all say they originate from ea.com.  Which doesn't necessarily preclude the other company, but normally when a third party is involved, the email headers have their domain as the originator.

I'm wondering if this is related to the Epsilon data breach.

The Epsilon breach is very large so it wouldn't be surprising. But one would think EA would know by now if it were the case so who knows.

You don't have to be hacked in order to get spammed. If by some way your e-mail address goes into public domain then you can get spam. Depending on how bad your e-mail is tossed around determines the amount of spam you could receive.

I know this cause I'm still fighting Blizzard ever since Starcraft 2 went live and one of my e-mail addresses went public view within their own systems(SC2 launch day bug within Battle.net) but they reacted too little to late to stop the damage.
