I've read from gamespot's review for DA:O that the PC version is harder and the console versions are kinda more action oriented and less strategic in battles. I have the PC version so I can't confirm this personally. I'm saying this not to start a flame war but maybe this is one of the main reasons some ppl finish the game in 50 hrs and others in 100+ hrs. Other reasons may be not gathering all the armies, don't bother with the sidequests, playing on easy mode, skip dialogues, etc...

Which makes me go. wheres the 70 hours lol? Do they talk for 50 hours of the game? Which also makes me go... I can understand the expansion being 15 hours, if the real game only took 27..
Oh and this is on Normal.

The part where you go through the trial for the Sacred Sands crossing the bridge took me two hours to get across the first play through. The second time still took me an hour cause i forgot to write the code down LOL. But in all joking and screw ups aside not counting reloads it only took me 60 hours first play through on Easy as I didnt do alot of the side quests. Second playthrough it took me about 75 hours. I keep going though Ive beaten it with every possible outcome. The game still keeps dragging me back in.

Almost too long, in fact...
That begs the question: how long is too long?

See I think this is bugged on the console, cus I just stepped one guy on the path to make two transparent bridges, 1 and 2, and then i took another guy to step on the path to make two more transparent bridges, 3 and 4, then I took my guy and just ran in order on the left paths to make 1 solid, then 2, 3 and 4. I didn't do that huge ass tricky nonesense that I read after I had done it lolol

for me it takes as long as it takes. its not how and when you get there. its if you enjoyed the ride

Because that is essentially what you have done.
I bet you can give us examples of other games taking you upwards to 100+ hours which you thought was good but I bet those games were filled with useless game filler that is meant to waste your time. If you actually enjoy this game filler than more power to you.
Some people prefer less game filler and more dialogue. You know the stuff you skip through. And if this is not your cup of tea then you should probably not play any more Bioware games any longer because that is what you are going to get.

I took about 45hrs. for my first playthrough on normal. I must have done about half the sidequests in the game, maybe less depending on ones I missed. I read most of the codex. Also this was without the dlc missions. I wonder if people with 80+ hour game time spend a lot of time just running around? Still, no arguing here that the game is a long one. I am currently replaying on hard and the game is still fun!
Nope. All spent doing stuff and I don't always read the codex entries if I'm immersed in the action when they come up. I also haven't done the mage's collective or mercenary quests, as doing them doesn't fit with my character. I do talk to people as much as possible, especially the characters in camp. For me, the most enjoyable part in the game is reactions from NPCs and companions to dialogue choices and the differences it makes to the game. I rarely skip a cut scene, unless I watched it seconds before and am reloading to backtrack on a dialogue choice that got unintended results (sometimes they don't mean what I think they mean). I don't really understand how its possible to get through so fast if one is talking to all the characters one is supposed to and fully exploring all the places in the game, but having fun is the main thing, so I don't suppose it matters unless like the op, one feels that the game is short. In that case, I have to say, it's only short if you want it to be.

I've completed the game 9 times now, completing every side quest and getting to between lvl 23 and 25 on each of the characters, and my fastest time was still just over 27 hours, which was almost entirely due to skipping through about 95% of the dialogue.
Like others have said, it's all about how you play the game, if you're a power gamer that has significant experience, chances are your total time playing is going to be on the shorter end of the spectrum,
If you want more, I'd suggest starting a new character and playing a different origin, the differences in dialogues and interactions with NPCs makes it a lot of fun to do.

There are so many variables that make it hard to compare playtimes, such as:
- mode (easy/hard/nightmare)
- treatment of dialogue (do you listen, or do you just read subtitles and get it over with?)
- codex (do you read it always, sometimes, never?)
- side quests (do them or not?)
- romances (bother with them, or not?)
This is definitely the main thing.
How do people get to 80+ hours (myself, first was 128 hours) on a run-through?
Here are factors that affected my time (playstyle, system, environment, etc.)
- Playing on the PC at Normal difficulty, no mods on the first time through
- I pause ALOT in combat (always have in these kinds of games) as I love micro-managing the party's actions
- first run through I was tweaking the tactics for my party a lot, so a lot of time going through the options and seeing how they affected combat
- I talked to EVERY NPC that you can click on.
- I read every Codex entry, not skimmed - sometimes reread good ones or to tie together connected entries
- I explore every inch of evey map I get on, often backtracking if I think I might be down a hall or corridor that "ends the area" before I've finished exploring the whole map (this is an old habit from games that used to force you off a map if you triggered the end goal of the map.)
- I listen to the entire dialog as spoken by people. I consider my responses and what best fits the character I am playing. Sometimes this causes a quandry and I might spend a good five minutes deciding a response for certain situations if two options seem equally likely or no options seem to fit my character.
- I go back to areas after they are clear and talk to people after major events have happened: say I cleared Orzammar, and then went on and cleared Redcliffe - I'd go back to Orzammar and talk to the key NPCs and merchants to see if anything had changed as a result (it often does.)
- with my chosen party members (I try to stick to the same party members through the whole game as much as possible in Bioware games) I do all the conversations in camp, often checking back with them after major events to see if they have new stuff to say
- I stop moving to listen to the intra-party banter
- I micromanage equipment and items, trying to decide what best to give my guys from what's available while balancing what I think looks cool and what the characters as I am RPing them would use
- I often revisit merchants, when I have more money or after a major event has happened (kind of mentioned before, but not in the context of more money)
- I don't use a walkthrough AT ALL, any FAQ or forum advice: first time through I soldier on, making my own decisions and discoveries (and opinions) so I'm not influenced by others and I get to make my own mistakes, miss items and dialog results on my own that I get to discover on my own on replays, etc.
I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff, but that should give those of you who say "I beat it 30 hours and I DID EVERYTHING POSSIBLE, what do you guys who get over 50 hours leave your game on for a week without playing it?" an idea of how I can take 128 hours.

300-400 codex entries
level 22 in the end
Did every single side quest, every job board.
Got traveler achievement.
Did both DLC content.
Killed Flemeth, killed high dragon

Its cheaper to hire some voice over losers to talk for 50 hours and count that as "game time" then it is to create 50 hours of levels, mobs, art, quests, etc. that we can actually play.
First, have you any idea who actually does the Voice overs? Unless your Mark Hamil.
Second, only people who cant get 50 hours plus on their first play through actually playing the game, are fpsers who shouldnt be playing an RPG expecting a splatfest in the first place then comming on here to complain.

There are several Codex Quests (31 I believe) That may not show up as quests at all; you have to manually read/complete them.Lisalyanne wrote...
OK, no one in town has the strategy guide in, and I must be missing a lot of content or something. I heard the game was supposed to be around 75 hours long, I have finished it twice in around 32 hours each time. Including Wardens Keep and Shale DLC. I search around for as much as the side missions that I can find, and still find myself lacking in content. I love the game but finding myself wanting a lot more content. I have done the side quests for the NPC's, Morrigan, Leliana, Alistair, Sten, Shale, Zevran (more of an incounter), Wynne...Done all the blackstone irregular quests I can find, quests from the tavern in Denerim, the Mages collective, Crows and burglary.
What am I missing? Thanks!

So? Expensive actors like Dr. Frankenfurter don't have that many lines.
Many are just random_voice_actor_01 droning on and on about the defense of Redcliffe or telling me I must need supplies after all that.
Its still cheaper than creating content - i.e. maps, levels, game mechanics, art, troubleshooting, QA, etc. (Otherwise, maybe they wouln't have re-used the same 'dirty city street' zone 5 times).

My first playthrough on easy I skipped a lot but finished at 57 hours.
Second playthrough I did pretty much everything on normal difficulty and finished at 50 hours.
All those times include 5 minute 'smoke breaks' usually each hour, and the occasional leave the game up for an hour or so while i get distracted.

That, or they want to hit every single Party Banter area, which are quite numerous, and have several different combinations of the characters you currently have in your active party.WhiteEclipse wrote...
The people who say the game took them over 100 hours, probably leave it on pause (esc. button), go eat and shower and come back. The game counts that time.
