Hmm... so you're in the server browser at this point?
You're trying to connect to a server that is in red?
If so, these are password protected servers. You need to go to the server's website and figure out what the password is. Usually this means creating a forum ID over there and applying for access or whatever.

Create a new login / account.
You probably can use the same account name you are trying to login as right now, unless it is taken already. If not add something to it ( a digit or the like ) and get it so you can create a new account.
Your account here has nothing to do with the in game multiplayer account.

There are multiple passwords needed and anything is possible, it's a computer and while known for logic when bugs happen logic tends to not be very helpful. I can't explain why you are having an issue, however i can make suggestions that if you follow and report back the results we can narrow down and discover what the actual issue is.
Make sure you just reboot your whole system, just to rule out some weird wonkiness going on. It might just be something silly you are missing as well and starting over will allow you to get in correctly.
If you are using the dm client, you NEED the private dm password, i am really assuming you are not using this. Make sure you used the regular game and not the dm client to start the game.
If you are a client, and the PW put a password on their server, you will NEED the password for the PW from the owner or forum of that PW. Is the PW listed in red? What PW is showing the problem.
If you are just logging in, you need the password for gamespy which is related to the now defunct original forums, if the authorization servers are down it can get wonky as you can get past the login screen. If you are having issues try just creating another new account, making sure not to use any weird characters, accents, just A-Z, a-z and 0-9 with no spaces for both user name and password. I've seen issues where an account just does not seem to work and via doing a completely new one it seems to, i suspect that using odd characters can cause issues, or perhaps it's just russian roulette. Did you get any messages about authorization servers being down.
If you are still having trouble, try connecting to another PW and see if it does the same issue. If so it's an issue with that PW. ( ie my PW is dungeon eternal x in action, and is not password protected, can you connect to it? ) This might narrow down the issue to the PW you are trying to connect to, and we can get someone else to try seeing if they have a problem on that PW.

You're kind of contradicting yourself here.Dragon__Lich wrote...

If you're already in the Server Browser, the only password you'd be asked for is the one on a password protected server you're trying to connect to.
Which server are you having this trouble with?
