I agree with the main original post when she said that hawke is not as appealing as The Hero. I know I still and always will feel The Hero of Ferelden accomplished the more heroic and tougher tasks and has more of my respect than Hawke has been able to muster. I like Hawke, he just doesn't quite accomplish the world changing and almost impossible endeavors Hero is faced with. Hawke sort of had a walk in the park while the Hero proved his skill and worthiness and willpower by uniting the different races, defeating the Darkspawn, conquering the Fade and a huge number of its Demon Dominions, and expose and decide the fate of Loghain and made it look rather easy. Hawke is a likeable guy but is kinda dull in my eyes and extremely predictable and accomplishes his own milestones but nothing that compare to the Blight ending and world & people changing tactics of the Hero. So, Hero of Ferelden is superior to Hawke anyday!!

Hawke is still a great strong hero warrior and deserves his respect as the Champion, but so long as it doesn't overshadow the efforts of the Hero . Both of em great titles and great deeds great men

I never understood why the Champion of Kirkwall was treated as being just as impressive as the Hero of Ferelden.

Let's see... Kirkwall = city, Ferelden = country.

Hawke... saved a small city from a small fleet of rogue Qunari. Warden... saved a whole country from getting wiped off the map by the Blight.

Hawke's most famous kill... the Arishok. The Warden's most famous kill... the Arch-freaking-demon!

I don't think the "Champion" holds a candle to the Hero of Ferelden, yet so many characters and players act like Hawke is just as impressive as, if not more so than the Hero of Ferelden.

Well there's:

1)Hawke is more recent? Just that?

2)Wardens are known for killing Archdemons, when it comes down to it. Its impressive as hell, but not surprising. I think the thing with Hawke is that he manages to get through and survive several crazy situations with odds that technically may be higher than most of what the Warden goes through. Basically he just seems either really capable or really lucky (or in terms of how things come tumbling down, he seems really incapable or really unlucky, but that seems to be a more minority opinion about Hawke in-universe).

I'm talking about characters though, not player reaction.

Like, I think that the Hawke Champion, having the mix of being recent, odds stacked against, not having to do something but deciding to anyway, and maybe (no proof but just speculating) being one of the most impactful Champions ever = Hawke being at least approx the level of the Warden.

I mean really, sure, in the end he's not. But as a single person, I think its justifiable enough that while the Hero has songs across Thedas (or at least Ferelden and maybe Orlais and such) about him, Hawke has impressed whispers persist across Thedas. Especially since he did such things as defeat/deal with the Qunari Arishok and because Varric has been 'elaborating' Hawke's life to others. In fact Varric is probably one of the primary reasons that this Champion of Kirkwall has a reputation beyond 'just' being a Champion. Thanks Varric!

For the record I like the Warden more and think he's more powerful overall.

One important detail is that Kirkwall is not just some city - it's an independent city-state. On its own, it's arguably just as influential, if not more, than Denerim. It's basically a small country.

There are years of Hawke's story we don't see. The timeline of the gameplay, put together, is probably roughly equal to DAO (about a year). But there are 3 year skips between the Acts - the Champion probably wasn't sitting on their hands all this time. They may have traveled all over the Free Marches for all we know.

Another thing is that while both the Warden and the Champion had a team of followers, the Warden also had other allies. It's not apparent in the gameplay because we only play with our party, but the Warden started gathering allies pretty quickly. If you want to go the hard roleplaying route, Hawke really scraped his way up from the very bottom to the very top. Of course, the Warden did much the same, but just being a Grey Warden opened some doors that Hawke had to kick in.

In the end, the events the Warden was involved with were more "epic" in terms of scale, but in terms of impact, I think the Champion was just as important in the grand scheme of things.

Also, the Free Marches seem more cutthroat than Ferelden.

EDIT: old thread is old, but it being in Combat strategy is weird
