If they wanted to make Kirkwall feel like a prison that you wanted to escape and never come back to, they succeeded.
I see how dead Kirkwall is compared to other great game cities, and I weep.

I agree. Kirkwall could have been one of the most memorable cities in a video game. Now it's forgettable at best. When I heard it was going to take place in one city I was hoping for something like AC but instead we got 4 small hub worlds and reused dungeons galore. The concept art for Kirkwall was amazing it made me think of that city from LOTR, Gondor. It would have been amazing had they been able to create an open world city that lived up to the concept art. And I have no doubt that it would have cemented Kirkwall into the minds of gamers for years. Now it's cemented into the minds of gamers if only for it's mediocrity. It's a shame really.

I know this is probably just a case of the grass is always greener, but I can't help but think literally every other region and city in Thedas that I know about is more interesting to me than Free Marches/Kirkwall.
I would much rather see Antiva, Rivain, Tevinter, Orlais, Anderfells. Again, I know I have a bias since I have gotten to experience Kirkwall already. But jeez, all those other areas sound so much more interesting to me!
