the launcher closes but when the game is supposed to start nothing happens

Does it work when you try it direct from the game exe?
c:\\program files\\bioware\\mass effect\\binaries\\masseffect.exe
If so, sounds like the link between the launcher and the exe is broken, and you can bypass that problem by creating a shortcut direct to the exe file. If not, then it will be the exe that has become corrupt, and you will have to reinstall.
