If you take the time to line up arhcer's lance right you can do some serious damage. I've killed entire waves with a well placed shot (it auto kill normals and critters).

They seem a lot more...exciting than plain archer skills.

Why couldn't Bioware swap royal archer tree with the current archery tree...
Because the archery tree is better than royal archer? You should learn how to play it. Use archer's lance to autokill multiple normal mobs. Use Hail of Arrow to setup choke points. Use shattering arrow against multiple brittle mobs (see cone of cold). Just use pinning shot on cooldown for a solid and cheap damage boost.. It's all good stuff.

Hmm you might be right. The Royal Archer has no AoE and all single target. When you say normal mobs, do you mean everything that doesn't have a HUGE hp bar (lieutenants)?

Pretty muych yeah. Critter mobs have smallest health bars while normal mobs have the average sized health bars. The make up the majority of mobs in the game.

Maybe they should switch it with the marksman tree. That sustained is insane XD
I do agree the marksmen tree is damn awesome. It's why varric gets a spot in my party almost all the time (and he's a great character). The archery tree is still really good. I'd put enough points into it for improved archer's lance if anything.

So pretty much I can just line up every up by going around a corner and lancing everything to death in an instant?

Still, the tree is worth investing in. Pinning shot still does nice dmg even if most elite and boss mobs seem to ignore the pinning. Burst arrow is not a huge dmg-dealer alone but if it's upgraded and used against brittle targets it's really good, and it's aoe which is nice. Archer's Lance is usefull ofc when the enemy stand in rows (sadly that doesn't happen very often). Rain of arrows is, if upgraded, really nice aoe but if its not upgraded the aoe is just to small to be worth it imo.

Varric's Marksman tree is probably one of the best tree, if not the best. Seriously, so much bonuses.

Pretty much, yeah. You can use it as new wave jumps into the fight. They often spawn in a perfect line along one side of the room. It's great for say skeletons that take a long time to crawl out of the ground. You can also have your tank run in and pick up the baddies. They will form an arc around your tank and you can clear most of them out with a well placed lance along one side.
There's so many different ways to get mobs packed together.

If you play on Nightmare, the only useful skill that doesn't kill your companions is Pinning Shot.
This, and really i'd rather just shoot and use that point for something else.

Depends. Rogues and mages can be marked as "elite" (there's a difference between rank and class) and won't be auto gibbed. With enough practice you'll figure out which ones it works against.
