Sten from DAO was a Sten of the Beresaad, the Qunari Vanguard. They have no horns. The Stens/Squadleaders form DA2 are just normal qunaris from the army.

Ah, that's right. The Beresaad don't have horns.

Where did you read this?

I corrected myself in my previous post.

EDIT: The Ben-Hassrath don't have horns. David Gaider's explaination.

I'm not quite sure if all the Beresaad have no horns. But David Gaider said in an Interview with Gameinformer:

“Not all qunari have horns. Some are born without them, but it has never been considered a defect. Instead the mark is considered special, indicating one who is clearly meant for a special role in their society—as a Ben-Hassrath who enforces religious law or as an envoy to other races. It is also not uncommon for qunari who abandon their beliefs to remove their own horns, for reasons not yet clear."

So maybe Sten was placed in the Beresaad because he doesn't look so intimidating without horns. Maybe the hornless qunari are used more often in the Beresaad, because they are the first qunari to explore new lands and don't look as alien as the "normal" qunari. He is just a big humanoid and not a big humanoid with huge horns on his head and covered in strange bodypainting Posted Image

I have a curious question...

What would a female Qunari be called?

I've been toying with the idea of adopting a female Qunari character but I've no idea what to call her.

Their job? Like everyone else?

Unless you're doing a Tal'Vashoth in which case she could be named anything you'd like.

My question was more along the lines of "what job would a Qunari female take" and "what would that be in the Qunari tongue"?

{edit}
The only word I have found was "gena: a craftsperson or crafting"

I haven't got the slightest about what it would be called in the Qunari tongue, but jobs like farmers and any administrative duties is a good place to start.

Some jobs I do know that could be female are Ariqun (high hen of priesthood), Arigena (high hen of artisans), Tamassran (a part of the priesthood that does child rearing and breeding) and Ashaad (seeker/scholar, not sure about gender, but I remember Mary mentioning that it was one of the few work groups that could be mixed).

Tamassran is a Qunari priestess, other than that we have precious little info on Qunari society outside their warmachine, so we can't really tell what a female Qunari "name" is.

I was hoping for something a little simple, nothing "high in command", so to speak.

I wonder if I could email Mary and ask her for some advice? XD;

Thank you guys for your help~

Man, Qunari must have a really hard time talking about each other when they aren't around.

Horned Sten: Which Aaravard should get promoted?
Arishok: I don't know. Aaravard #3?
Horned Sten: Is he the guy who can break dance like crazy?
Arishok: No... you're talking about Steve. He's not even Qunari.

I always figured that was sort of the point of the Qunari naming convention. It inhibits personal relationships, and promotes societal relationships. If Aaravard earns your repect, you'll respect not just him, but Aaravard, Aaravard, Aaravard, and even Aaravard, because in your head you just think of all of them as Aaravard, and sort of combine all their different qualities into one ideal Aaravard.

The weirdest thing about the Qunari naming system has to be when you change sub-roles. Sten says in DA:O that Qunari are assigned to a role early on, but are allowed to move about fairly freely in that role. Imagine if every time you switched jobs, your name changed.

Do we know if the naming convention is only for Qunari military? Or if all Qunari stations in life have the same type of system?

Knowing the Qunari, it is not just the military, but since we've only had dealings with that branch of Qunari society, I thought I'd ask...

Their "names" are wholly their job titles; from a priest, to a farmer. You have your title, and that is your name.

That is, that is what I've gleaned from the short letter Ms. Kirby sent me yesterday. ^^,

Their names are also the station with which they are assigned. This makes sense under the design of the Qun. They are all the Qun. So that means Every Sten is just a Sten within the Qun. Why would they be anything else. It's a declaration of their role, they are a part of a whole and not unique. So in general you may ask, "How do they know who they are talking to?" If someone says your name in a grocery store you may look in the general direction but if the person isn't looking at you? Then you just go about your business. This is not a hard concept.

Before they are given a role they have another name. Basically the equivalent of declaration of their status at the time.
