I have to admit that for the last couple of years I thought of Rihanna as just one among many in an endless lineup of female R&B performers. To be honest, most of the girls/women out there lack individuality and flair, and using sex appeal to sell records gets *really* old after a while (and don't get me started on the disappointment that was Ciara, who never mind her solid dance talent and initial success with crunk-R&B, seems to be deservedly hurtling down the path to oblivion with each successively, desperately oversexed single). As for Rihanna, I did like "Umbrella" when it came out, but even then it seemed overproduced. But fast forward to 09/10, and along comes this little gem - "Rude Boy", which is a damn good song on its own with a riveting, dazzling video to match. Of course, it's still a creation of the music industry, but I love the way it hearkens back to Rihanna's early Carribean-dancehall roots and yet makes full use of her new aggressive swagger. I don't think any other singer - even Beyonce - could pull this one off the way Rihanna does. Props to her; we might just see the makings of a true artiste just yet.
