Acapella ~ Kelis
Kelis has been one of my long-time favorite singers for a good while now. It's interesting to see how she's evolved as an artiste and individual, even if it's been a bumpy ride (she hasn't exactly achieved commercial success in the same sense as Rihanna and Beyonce, and she divorced her rapper husband Nas earlier last year). I still think nothing can top her earlier works in the days back when she sported her trademark Technicolor afro and had a more punk/rock edge to her music (which was unusual considering how black female artistes usually get shoehorned into the R&B industry - a road which she eventually headed down in the last decade). Still, it's awesome to see her make a comeback. I'm not sold on the monotonous dance-beat backing, but I think Kelis' versatility and the vibrancy of the video makes up for it. Looking forward to her album release this summer.

You know, I sometimes wish folks would provide links or descriptions of the tracks that they're listening to for the sake of others who might be interested. Some of y'all's choices look promising, but without being able to tell what kind of genre or song style it happens to be, there's no way I'm going to click through every link to find out. Just my two cents.
If I Ruled The World ~ Nas feat. Lauryn Hill
Lyrics
Old-school song that truly touches the soul of hip-hop: the dreary reality of society's ills meets the dreams and hopes of one man - or perhaps even a collective. Plenty of conscious black history references in Nas' wordplay, of course. Oh, and Hill, who was one of the top songstresses of the late 1990s and 2000s absolutely shines on this track. This is a classic.
