Demons and Fear

Does anyone else think that the way demons have been employed in storylines and quests have somewhat dampened the horror/fear effect on the player?

For instance: For DAO's Orphanage quest, I got quite freaked out by the creepy camera perspectives and haunting voice, only to be very disappointed to learn the culprit behind the elaborate orchestrations of horror was a mere Rage Demon. It's not that Rage demons aren't scary (although I don't think they are), but employing an already familiar trope (demons) as the villain in most of DA's horror-based quests blunts the incitement of fear for me. Demons seem to be behind all the evil in Thedas, and after a while, this just gets plain repetitious and boring... especially considering the appearances of demons do not vary beyond their specific species.

DA2 signified a major improvement in this area by in the main plotline featuring the mysterious Lyrium Idol and the All That Remains quest, because I think they successfully used the fear of the unknown. Nobody seems to know what the heck is going on behind the Lyrium Idol, how and why it caused the mayhem it did, or if it truly sentient. I for one got quite freaked out in the Family Matters quest precisely because I couldn't quite understand the role the Idol played or guess what the heck that thing really was. I really hope the ultimate revelation has nothing to do with demons. The same with All That Remains. The mystery behind the disappearing women and the creepy realization that the evil behind all of that sprang from the murky depths of a madman's mind was much more effective than if they simply blamed a desire demon.

My point is, mystery is important in the fear factor. Fear of the unknown will always trump fear of the known, and as such I believe demons now have limited utility in terms of eliciting horrified reactions from veterans of the DA series, since they have been heavily used throughout DAO and DA2 as easily identifiable and quantifiable villains.

In DA3, I hope they create a greater arsenal of villainy and perversion; maybe show us more kinds of demons (are there more?), introduce more dimensions to them, or use brand-new kinds of villains. Even better, continue to exploit the darkness of the human psyche to provide refreshing instances of human evil; I think monsters we can identify (but not quite understand) with can be far more scary than aliens from another dimension.

Please stop spamming demon-villains (or abomination-villains). I'm not afraid of them anymore.
