I purchased Dragon Age:  Origins, Ultimate Edition for the PC.  I previously had a copy of Dragon Age:  Origins installed (just the original game) and wanted the expansion and all of the DLC.  I attempted to install the Ultimate Edition, and the installation gets to "Extracting core.rar (15.7% - packages\\core\\data\\amins.erf)" then just stops and says:  "Installation Failed" with an "OK" button.  No other explanation.  I've
uninstalled the game completely (saved games, settings, all of it) and
attempted to re-install, but to no avail.  My specs are as follows:

Windows XP Pro SP3
AMD X4 640
4 GB RAM (3.25 recognized by windows)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260
500GB Western Digital hard drive with 345GB free space.

Anything else you need?

Please help, this is really frustrating.

So you did not uninstall the original version of DAO first?

I'm having the same problem, and would like to know why. Except I didn't have anything installed (I know, I'm late to the party), and it gets stuck at 15.7% extracting, then fails.

I'm having an issue with this as well... I got the ultimate edition and I do not have the original installed.. and at 15.7% extracting it says failed and then gives me an OK icon...

EA uses a couple of extra files on its disks to make copying more of a problem, and those cause DVD burners to choke sometimes. Try a different drive if you have access to another. Some people get around this by making hard drive folders and first copying everything there, then running installs from that source. I used a plain Sony DVD read-only drive in an old PC attached to my LAN for running my laser printer. I just accessed the disk across the LAN from the game box, and it worked fine for me.
