That's what I was thinking. That or the PC has abused him and that's the proclamation he shouts while leaving.

He's a gentle lover. Honest.

Actually, it's probably a Chantry symbol that depicts either the cross that Andraste was burned on (like Maria mentioned), or the sword of mercy that was used to end Andraste's suffering in her last moments. Or an amalgamation of the two.
(Otherwise known as a thinggie.)

It's the Sword of Mercy. The Templars have a similar image on their armor.

Mary, why are you missing a BioWare symbol?

The ways of the Bioware tags are whimsical and mysterious. I don't question them, for fear that I will somehow wind up with giant blue letters emblazoned over me in real life, which would make my driver's licence and passport photos look that much less like me.

I AGREE! Mary should have her own thinggie that looks like a stylized blue B. And then Maria can make threads entitled: "What is that over Mary's head?" and we can all discuss whether the 'B' stands for "brioche" or "braaaainz" and whether the blue has any significance.

From the unofficial Dragon Age Wiki:
"The Archon who ordered Andraste's execution was also the first converted to following the Chant of Light. According to the Chant, the Archon saw the error of his ways as soon as Andraste was burned. It was he that put the sword through her heart to put her out of her misery, which is why the sword is a symbol of mercy in Andrastian lore, and later repented her execution entirely."

Uhh... "atheist crusader" much?
Why is it that some people decide to hate/dislike someone without knowing him/her at all just because he/she has faith in God/something?
Just because they have something that gives them extra strenght what the ones lacking faith don't have?
What will you do if in the end whatever Leliana believes in the truth if it might get to be known in the game?
WIll you just ignore it or say sorry to her ingame, or will you start the game anew with more acceptance, tolerance, and fairness shown towards her this time?
As far I see she is no inquisitor or even a cleric, just because she is faithful is not by any means a cause to react as you did. Or do you in RL immediately dislike people who say that "Yes I am a faithful member of xyz church"? This atheist prejustice is not different from someone trying to FORCE his own believes on others, its just this time its about "non-belief" or "semi-nihilism"
btw, how many people novadays in RL wear a cross on their neck, and how many of them are truly believers, and how strong they believe in what they do? In a fantasy medieval world I bet it is not at all unrealistic to find holy symbols on most weapons and armor, or even on handkerchief, even in Lord of the Rings was nearly everything ornamented with noble and sacral symbols if not with arcane ones.
Because it signifies a certain state of mind. People with religious beliefs are detached from reality, they live in their own lala-wonderland with angels and miracles and other supernatural fantasies.joriandrake wrote...

You call it an ''extra strenght'', but it is in fact a weakness - you are counting on help from above, which never actually comes and can lead to great dissapointment when that eventually becomes clear. Like when you suddenly wake up with incurable cancer.
That's why it is so dangerous.
Personally I can deal with religious people, but I'm pretty certain I can never be friends with them or have any kind of meaningful relationship, because it is impossible to take them seriously.
OT: Back to Leliana, I really hope she is less preachy in-game than in the trailers that we have been shown so far.
