Marethari loved Merrill so much so she was willing to trap a demon within her own body.
Just so that Merrill may not die as a result of her own foolishness.
Of all the relationships in this game, I find the relationship between Marethari and Merrill most touching - even though Marethari isn't exactly Merrill's mother, this relationship bore all signs of a mother-daughter relationship.
A motherly figure sacrifices herself to save a loved one from her own foolishness. Cliched, but still a classic storytelling device.
My heart was moved throughout the entire quest. And Merrill realized her mistakes at last.
Even though Dragon Age 2 was an unfocused and sloppy bit of work, the writing still shines here and there. Particularly, in moments like these.
That final scene with Marethari and Merrill is one of the most touching scenes in a video game.

I completely agree. This moment made me cry. I loved Merrill's quests--all of them--and the final scene with Marethari was heartbreaking. Beautifully done!

I wish I had a PC game so I could get those tattoos off Merrill's face.

I would have liked it if the quest was not so messed up. Tried to figure out what was wrong, but apparently you get the endscene in Merrils house before the action. Bugged me so much the rest of the quest was kind of lost to me cause I search on the internets what I was doing wrong.

I wouldn't say touching. Hilariously tragic is more like it, especially if you genocided the rest of the clan immediately afterward.

And if you killed them and then she never mentions it.

It would be better if it wasn't spoiled by BioWare themselves. Oh, and if there wasn't a gaping plot hole.

I thought it was sadder when I had to kill the whole tribe afterwards. I essentially had to commit genocide to save my hide. I figured there had to be a better way to solve it, though, so I went back and found a route that wouldn't require me to kill everyone.

Yeah, Marethari got tricked by the pride demon and took it in under the mistaken belief that she could bind it. So motherly of her.

It was sad, but then I killed the entire clan and nothing happened afterwards, so it became a "...wtf just happened" moment instead, lol.

She kept peace until we killed her, props for that. Doubt it would be easy to resist a demon inside your head telling you to blow up the world.

First time I went thru that quest, I ended up killing the entire clan. I reloaded, chose a different option. Marethari's Clan still lives.
I felt much better.

Keeper got fooled by a demon and got in the way. Tragic yes, but also kind of moronic really :|

I felt bad for sending the Keeper ahead. Didn't even get to 'talk' with Merrill either. And when we slaughtered the whole clan(for if there were more than that, it would have been a town, not a camp), and she didn't say a peep...*sigh*
I suspect the lazy writers are EA's fault. No writing required for the Sims, I'm sure.
*sarcastic* Or perhaps they plan to drop all the extra dialogue I felt was missing, in a later DLC?

Nice to see a thread where someone appreciates what Marethari did instead of bending over backwards to make excuses for Merrill's stupidity.
And I'm guessing no mention of the clan getting killed is just another bug. I'm pretty sure she mentioned it when I tried it.

She mentions it if you romance her. Sadly, she mentions it BEFORE it actually happens, right at the start of Act 3. She even smashes the mirror if you are at rivalry with her. Really bad timeline bug. I was lucky not to romance her in my first playthrough, so I didn't have the outcome of her questline spoiled for me, but it was still weird that she said nothing (until I discovered the reason why).

Eh... I've seen better. Maybe I didn't care so much because the Dalish annoy me. In this game I'd say the Hawke/Carver reunion was more touching. Or maybe Gamlen talking to Warrior Hawke after becoming Champion... of course, it always depends on the mindset of the player, and the tone you take during the conversation.

This just in - if the demon died with Marethari, wouldn't jumping off sundermount have been a lot more heroic? I mean "I told you you're wrong, and to prove I'm right, I'll pay the price for you, now stab me" is somewhat cruel towards Merill, isn't it?

It was sad yeah, but the saddest moment in the game?
Leandra dying took it for me. very well delivered by the voice actor

What Hawke/Carver reunion? Well, my game had Bethany but there really wasn't much of a "re-union" when I saw her for the first time after she was taken away. Unless you're referring to the sibling-becomes-grey-warden story branch, if so, I'll just look it up on youtube.
Anyways, the most touching scene IMO was the ending of the Quentin quest involving your mother.

It was Saemus for me, I wanted Petrice dead so bad. I would have used Saemus as a companion if I could have.

@LocutusX, yeah that's what I mean. At the end of Act 3, if you play as a Mage and made Carver a Grey Warden... I just think it's cool that the two of them finally reach an understanding. But like I said, this is always dependent on how you view the characters, what tone you take, etc... I'm sure many people hate Carver too much to agree with me on this.

I can understand him as a person, and like him as a well written character, but he still deserves to be murderknifed in the balls for his "Last time trouble came looking for you, it found mother" line :|
