Fenris will mention the lack of halla as you walk through the Dalish camp and Merrill will make a couple comments about not having any halla, but I can't find anywhere that says what happened to them.  Did I miss it?  Was it something I have completely forgotten about from DAO?  Or is there just nothing about that?

I believe that the clan had to leave their halla in Fereldan when the crossed the sea on ships. If there is any point that his is explained or mentioned I am not sure.

Bioware couldn't be bothered to make them.

Merrill says something about the halla having been "lost," but never expands on how or why. It's weird.

On a particularly steep decline, the Dalish learned too late the importance of routine Aravel brake maintenance.

The real shame is that I  read they had all the <real choices> packed neatly in their saddlebags.

That's right!  they ride halla sometimes.....well, not  anymore, but before the event...sure.

Same thing that happened to bears and wolves. They looked horrible in DAO and they didn't have time to remake them from scratch so they hid them away.

Much like in Medieval Europe many species were hunted to extinction in the Free marches.

Varric didn't know what happened so he couldn't be bothered to tell Cassandra?

Oh, wait, 'It wasn't the story BioWare wanted to tell!'

Again!

'Someone pressed a button and all the halla exploded!'

Oh, I've got another:

'They're on Varric's chest!'

Not to detract from the pointless hilarity, but one of the dalish ambient dialogues hints that something happened to the halla:
-It really wasn't your fault, you know.
-Ma serannas, Junar. It feels like my fault, though.
-We can get more halla.
-It won't be the same.

I figured they would leave them in Ferelden, saying that that's their natural enviroment and all

Intriguing.

I have a feeling this was meant to be a subplot but was trimmed from the final game.

Nah, it's probably just some random thing.
Makes me wonder though.
What did he do?

I thought that too...until I started to wonder how they got the landships up a mountain. Did they pull them?

I think they lost the halla recently, like not long before Hawke arrived.

Mounts in the Dragon Age setting are ill-fated. The griffons are extinct, nobody remembers how to ride a horse, brontos are stuck in caves off the Deep Roads, and now someone lemminged the halla. Yep, it won't be the same because there are no more halla.

With no halla, how do the Dalish pull their aravels around? Blood magic is how. And a bunch of unwitting flat ears.

Eh, maybe. It wouldn't surprise me since so much of the game felt rushed.

Wouldn't be surprised if the clan found a way to blame Merrill for it, actually, to add fuel to her personal quest fire.

As the forums' resident Jewess, I thought it was hilarious.

Just today, one of the elves is all "Oh noes, I'm a bad elf," and someone replies "It wasn't your fault. We'll get new halla" The first elf says "It won't be the same"

So, who knows what happened?
