Not to detract from the pointless hilarity, but one of the dalish ambient dialogues hints that something happened to the halla:
-It really wasn't your fault, you know.
-Ma serannas, Junar. It feels like my fault, though.
-We can get more halla.
-It won't be the same.

I overheard this conversation between the two Dalish elves. My guess is that they traveled through the Wounded Coast, and the person in charge wasn't watching and had them go around a sharp turn. Then the halla got spooked and fell off the side of the cliff, down into the sea.

Intriguing.

I have a feeling this was meant to be a subplot but was trimmed from the final game.

Nah, it's probably just some random thing.
Makes me wonder though.
What did he do?

He accidentally all the Halla.
Is this bad?

I just figured that they weren't allowed by whoever brought them across the sea to bring the halla along - this was likely during the flee from Ferelden, when the boat captains could get more coin out of taking refugees than a handful of beasts of burden, so they told Marethari's clan that they couldn't bring the halla along.

I miss the animals. DAO had cats (which apparently were all eaten by refugees...), ravens/crows hopping about (I loved their bounce!), chickens, halla, goats... Kirkwall is so devoid of animals with the exception of birds way up high in the sky.

I demand the return of animals in DA3!

The Dalish clan didn't have enough hunters left since too many died to things like the Varterral and whatnot....soooooo they had to eat the halla.

Halla season.

In semi-seriousness though, there *were* halla when they arrived at Sundermount, a banter between Merrill and Carver is about her complaining about the smell of a ship hold full of halla.

"I can still smell it..."

Bioware didn't want to make new models for them so they were written off to be dead as an excuse for not being in the game.

Oh, and, by the way?  I love all you guys!  I wanted a straight answer, but the funny ones are SOOOO much better.

Maybe the reason is that Bioware didn't have time to make new Halla models.

I didn't mind that we didn't see any halla around. their incessant half-baa half-moo annoyed me in DAO, just like how I loved my dog, but between him and the Cute Nug, they ruined just about every conversation I had at camp.

<Right before a battle I grab Alistair for a quick aside and we talk>
Alistair: Uhhh you want to talk NOW?
Me: Yes, because I can never hear you over all that annoying noise at the camp.

Did she cough up a snake in the process?

Oh, no, wait, that's resurrection spells. Pay me no mind.

The Halla are hiding with the female Qunari and dwarves.
