I've played this choice every which way with Carver (still can't bring myself to play anything but a mage past the opening credits). My first run, I left him behind at Leandra's urging. I really don't like him as a Templar, though. He spent the whole first act trying to protect me from the templars, it felt odd for him to join. Plus he acted shocked when I sided with the mages at the end, when really it should've been obvious.

My second run, I took him in the Deep Roads with Anders. I adore Warden!Carver. I think this is the best option for his personal growth. He resents Hawke for a while, but eventually he learns to stand on his own and comes to terms with his brother's success. Plus, there seem to be far more interactions with Carver when he's in the Wardens than when he's a Templar. I liked these mini-reunions, and I liked that he'll fight with you at the end.

I killed him off in the Deep Roads my third playthrough, mainly just to see what changed. While I liked seeing my LI captured during the third act (I think it plays better with a LI than with your sibling), I missed Carver. And Hawke definitely looked heartbroken towards the end when he realized all his family was gone and his LI just blew up the Chantry. I'm glad I did it, but I don't think I'll be repeating that particular iteration.

Warden seems to be the most interesting option for both Carver and Bethany in my opinion.

Warden!Bethany gets somewhat emotionally frozen for 'a few' (read Deep Roads to the Goddamnit Anders part), and stuck in a 'do what I can to survive' mentality, but in the end she becomes accepting of where life (read:you the player) has placed her and wants to help her sibling again.
Working on a Circle!Bethany game now so I can't comment there.
Templar!Carver may have been his choice, but he was still pretty resentful to my Hawke, didn't have him at full friend/rival so he didn't join me until the brawl with Merideth as a helper NPC.
Warden!Carver, who was full rivalry, joined me and was a self-confidant and strong young man I was pretty proud of calling brother and ally.

Whether you choose Warden or Circle/Templar for your playthrough both seem to have more story viability than the alternative (Sibling dies in the Deep Roads to the Blight). While you get the one quest with the kidnapping that is altered to a LI or the NPC with whom Hawke has the most affection, that seems a sad trade off to the loss of lil bro or sis.
Personally I liked GW Carver's scenes for completely different reasons than Templar (and will probably like Bethany's little appearances for the same) but I felt very disconnected from Carver at the same time. Not only does he ****** and moan when he sees you there to retrieve Nate for Delilah but he also seems to just brush you off in Act 2 without batting an eyelash (I told him Mom was dead and he told Stroud they had to get moving).
Granted probably from a GW standpoint what they were doing must be urgent (Anders did steal the maps we use in Act 1 from Stroud so SOMEthing is going on behind the scenes we don't know) but it still felt very callous to me. At least when it is just Stroud telling me they have to go do GW stuff, I could accept it with more grace.
Still, his convos at the end as a GW (and that he shows up in the city instead of at the Gallows during The Last Straw) was a point in GW Carver's favor.
And he has a good final chat with you as a GW. But that may have been that I was playing a Male Hawke, I really bonded with Carver on that run. Sort of enjoyed the pissing matches with Carver.

Though he might take it more like a man - it kind of feels more natural, having him in the Templars. It's his thing, he chose it for himself, and it creates an interesting tension to his apostate sister. (Though there was real room for character development missed here, when the game didn't take apostate Hawke to the gallows after act two. But hey, that's what fanfiction is for :P)

Thanks for the input. Personally I think Carver is better off as a Warden than a Templar. Bethany as a circle mage fits a non-mage Hawke fighting for mages. Well at least that is what I have gathered from this thread.

My only play through so far, I left Bethany at home. I didnt know she'd be sent off to the circle, but at the time I just couldnt bear to take her away from mother. We'd just recently lost Carver... and well.. I just couldnt.

I think Circle Bethany turned out pretty good. I enjoyed seeing her when I entered the Gallows the final time; and it made me very furious when Meredith snarked about her. One of only the few times I used the Confrontational/Evil response, I believe I ended up getting a "You leave my sister out of this!". But anyhow- Circle Bethany seemed to hold her own, and from what I could tell, somewhat bonded with Orsino- since him turning into a Harvester received a "w-why?" in response.

My second playthrough I think I'll let my sibling turn into a GW- though I hope I get Carver; dont know if I HAVE to go mage for that; planning on rogue. Either or- whichever I get it'll be GW time for them. That way, hopefully, whatever LI I plan on will be taken captive during the Act 3 quest.

The only way to get Carver is to be a mage and the only way for love interest to be captured is if both of your siblings die.

I prefer Carver going into the Grey Wardens because his time in the Grey Wardens made him grow up. Carver joining the Templars ehhh; I could kind of agree since his name was given to him from Hawke's Father's best friend who was a templar that helped him escaped, but I prefer Carver joining the Grey Wardens. Bethany I could go both ways Grey Warden or Circle Mage.

That said, on my first playthrough I took Bethany into the deep roads thinking "well, I'll be extra careful". And then felt really, really awful for half an hour :|

This, very much this. that's the first time I have felt genuine sorrow for a game character. I left her behind in Kirkwall in this playtrough, I get to see how that turns out when I am to play more this weekend.

Well crap, I figured if your sibling went with the GW's people wouldnt be stupid enough to steal them. Or so cometh the wrath. And since I dont wanna play a mage, I guess bethany gets to die in the deep roads! Funtimes, funtimes. Thanks though.
