A wild hunch I know. But after seeing that old Thaig and the Lyrium Idol it makes me wonder.

It was stated at the very beginning of Origins that the Dwarven Kingdoms were the first to fall to the Darkspawn, which means they were most likely born/created underground.

The dwarves are more people of science rather than sorcery. And what we do know is that Darkspawn are born from Broodmothers, which are very advanced Ghouls(As stated by David Gaider in an old topic), which are just people who have survived the taint and been mutated by the corruption.

So, what if, scientifically speaking, ancient dwarves were experimenting and created the Taint by accident, became ill, and then their offspring were born as Darkspawn?
