I'm fairly sure it has something to do with your resolution... maybe try changing until you find an aspect ratio that doesn't have the black letterboxes?

Are you playing the game with a screen size of 1920x1200 (16:10 aspect)?
The most likely cause is: The black bars you see above and below are during the cut scenes because they are developed at 1920x1080(16:9 aspect). The game displayed at 1920x1200 is vertically bigger so the scene is centered. The only cure for this is to play the game at 1920x1080 (or other 16:9 aspect size).
