I am currently playing ME2 for the second time with an imported character, which was a Soldier. Quite frankly, I am torn between choosing Geth Shield Boost or Barrier as my alternate power. Which power should I choose and why?

If you recommend that I acquire another power, feel free to mention it and explain yourself.

For the soldier class, I recommend going with a different power.

The best ones would not interfere with AR, and/or complement an aggressive play style. So 1-pt Slam and Neural Shock are at the top of the list.

Reave would be an intriguing power to evolve, so for the Soldier, maybe Area Reave with Shock Trooper.

What weapons are you planning to use?

The good ol' Revanant, along with the Phalanx Pistol, Viper/Incisor sniper rifle, and Geth Plasma Shotgun.

Soldiers really don't 'need' a bonus power. Since AR is the soldier's bread and butter, I'd choose something with a low cooldown. Neither GSB or Bar. are good for much beyond and OMG button mash, which I don't thing does much good to a soldier.

I tend to use Heavy Warp Ammo because of the nice all around damage boost, but if you plan to bring Jack with you and use her party wide warp ammo, then Neural Shock or Reave are good choices.

Cool, so I'd recommend Hardened AR, Inferno, either Shock Trooper or Commando, for sure. Reave can be fun to use along with Inferno on the Revvy.

The evolution you go with could depend on which passive you'd prefer so I'd guess Heavy reave with Commando and Area Reave with Shock Trooper.

From here, you'll have 8 points to work with so you can evolve Disruptor to Squad and put one point in Concussive Shot or Cryo Ammo.

Here is a calculator you can use to try out different setups: http://mass-relay.co...ents/calculator

I already have maxed out Disrupter/Inferno ammo, Commando, AR, and Geth Shield Boost. I forgot to mention that this was my second play-through.

However, I like the suggestions you guys are giving me. I will consider retraining into Warp Ammo, considering the fact that I already have ammo types that can deal with armor, health, and shields, or Reave.

One more thing. Even though my level and maxed out powers from the first play-through carry into the second play-through, can I still continue to gain squad points?

You will gain points until you reach level 30 and then it all stops, for you and companions.

GSB on a soldier should be used before entering the battle and almost never during the battle. Depending on what difficulty you are going to be playing, Slam, GSB(others will argue against), Neuroshock, and Stasis are all good points, with Slam and Stasis being the best at lowest levels. I liked GSB to add to my shields before popping out on AR to spray and pray, extending my AR time out on the higher levels, though not everyone likes the way it plays. Slam is great for instant effect and the ability to warp bomb on the lift portion allowing a poor mans lift/biotic with uber weapons. To my mind one of the least effective things a Soldier can get is another ammo power, because Inferno is be best especially for Rev soldiers due to the fire effect. The bonus you will get from Warp/tungsten will not be enough to offset the effects of the CCfire, and use of squad points on a duplicate power. If you were playing a Widow soldier, you might get me to say warp ammo, but even then there are so many better powers, when you think about the bonuses of ammo powers only effects the weapons base damage unaffected by upgrades or gear.
So as an example with made up numbers bullet does 100 damage normally.
add 50 pts for ammo powers
add 50 pts for upgrades
add 10 pts for gsb
add 100 pts for AR(hardened and that may be low)
add 10 pts for miranda in party
add 20 pts for armor

Which totals out to 340pts per shot of which you spent 10 skill points our of 50 to eek out 50 ot them, so the difference is 340 per shot in AR or 290 per shot, all for 10 pts spent. The Inferno power at least makes organic dance instead of shooting at you which means you will be able to shoot longer without having to take cover. I am sure some others here have a very detailed explanation of ammo powers and their limited use(I know because I have read them).

Between GSB and Barrier, go for GSB and evolve it into Improved for the 10% Weapon Damage boost, which is very nice. As others have said, though, there are plenty of other good skills out there. With a little practice, a Slam/Warp combo is really effective, even with only 1 point in Slam. Of course you'll need to have Miranda or Thane in your party to bring Warp, but if you ask me, that's hardly a down side. For me, the biggest upside with 1-point Slam is that it allows you to max out all three ammo powers, which I find incredibly useful.

Stasis is another good one for the Soldier. LIke Slam, its tiny CD won't get in the way with AR.

Flashbang Grenade is good too, but you'll have to adjust to the longer CD.

I like Flashbang Grenade. It's insta-kill on husks at Veteran or lower difficulty. Husk crowd control is something the soldier sorely lacks in.

For bonus powers on a Soldier I agree that they shouldn't get in the way of an AR or should really save your hide.

Personally I usually go with an Ammo Power like Heavy Warp Ammo or Tungstun depending on the mission. I wouldn't argue with 1 or more points in Slam, Nueral Shock, Stasis, Energy Drain, or Reave as I could see uses for any of those powers [esp. the 1st 3 crowd control ones] ... I would avoid Geth Shield Boost, Barrier, Fortitude, etc. because they take too long to cool down.
