Just recently purchased my new laptop for school next year and after playing Mass Effect 2 (which it played perfectly) got an itch to play the first one again, So I downloaded it from steam and opened it. I use to not make it past the opening video but following some advice from EA support which was to empty my temp folder and end all non-essential processes i was able to play for awhile, the next day it started crashing on me again, Im awaiting a response from EA now but hopinh you fine people might be able to help me out.

Ill explain my crashes, the screen will usually go black with voice cutting off but music still continuing, before that too cuts out. I can't ctrl alt delete my way out and have to hold the power button to restart. I've been looking for fixes all day and tried a lot of things.

Running as Administrator ( steam and mass effect)
Running in Windowed
I have updated all my drivers, graphics and sound
Turned audio to software from hardware
I patched it to 1.02
I verified the files in steam

If you have any idea how to give me a hand it would be much appreciated, and please be gentle I'm not as technology savvy as i'd like to be..

It seems that you are using a graphics driver from December. Try downloading and installing the latest version here. If that does not work, try using Driver Sweeper (ignore ads, click "Download Now -- tested spyware free) to clear out ATI Display Drivers then try installing the latest drivers again.
