Has anyone else had this happen?

I bought ME1 a little over a week ago and loved it. Bought ME2 a couple of days ago and ... meh. I don't like the cover system, inventory changes or the hud. (Beside the point.)

After a bit of playing with my soldier character I thought I'd try my other character that I'd finished earlier today, yesterday now. I used 'configure' to import this new save and tried to start the game. It wouldn't run. Tried it a half a dozen or so more times with no luck. So I uninstalled ME 2, making VERY sure to save my characters and configuration. The game started up fine but I noticed that my soldier character wasn't showing on the load screen, my second character never showed.

Mildly irritated, mildly because I only had a few hours into ME2, I went to import my characters and start over.
Here's where I went from mildly irritated to really pissed off. All of my saves are gone... from both games. I tried 'system restore' but my first option was approximately the time I had problems with the game. I tried that point but the save files were still gone. The next date I had for restore was the day I installed ME1.

The only option I have now in either game is to start a new character.

I've submitted a ticket. and tried to follow the 'Transfer error article' link but it's a dead link.

Anyone else have a problem like this?
