I normally stick by all my decisions and the outcome of any Bioware game however I was kind of upset that I had to kill Fenris since I thought he was an interesting character. He was also a main part of my party, which kinda stunk. Now I am stuck with way too many mages and no warriors.
If you side with the mages and have a full rival Fenris, is there anyway to keep him from turning on you? I've tried almost every dialogue choice near the end and it seems it cannot be avoided.
Any tips?

He always turns against you initially. With a good friendship you can use the line "I thought you didn't support slavery" and he will join you before you go inside the gallows. Not sure if that line works if he is a rival though.

Full rival Fenris won't turn on you if you've done his quests. I've had him both as a friend and a romance partner at full rival at the end, and both times, he told Hawke that he thought she was making a mistake, but that he'd stick by her.

ejoslin is right. I had him on full-rivalry on my inital playthrough and he stuck by me. He will leave if you side with the mages and he isn't at maximum Friendship/Rivalry and you haven't finished his quests. If you ahve high Friendship you can coax him back later as Apathy1989 stated. I believe you don't get the same option on rivalry, though.

Well, he is nearly at max rival for me. Enough so that I have his rival ability in his tree. I also did all of his quests and such. However when I try and coax him back into joining me, he basically says "Hell no, I am not going to side with mages"
I tried all 3 options available to try and coax him and none of them would phase him. Its funny because I've heard of other people able to coax a rival Fenris with the same exact dialogue I chose, yet nothing.

You didn't do his act 3 Questioning Beliefs (you can't if he's not full rival).  This quest needs to be done in order for him to stick with you completely.

Edit: This shows him full rivalry romance before the final battle, siding with the mages (warning, major spoiler here).  He did not leave my party at all.  I have also had him not as a romance, but didn't bother frapsing it.  It really IS possible.

That was the last scene I got. It was awesome. The passion, the drama, the random musing about the messed up situations he gets into with you. Perfect.

I was no where near max friendship or rivalry with Fenris on my first playthrough, and he initially betrayed me, but when I asked him about slavery he came back on my side and supported me.

I think you can use that line no matter what level of friendship/rivalry you have.

I just checked, he is max rival and I did do all his quests. Yet for some reason even if I pick the exact same dialogue, nothing. He still won't come back to my side. Fenris must hate my guts! Heh heh

That was a Rival romance, maybe the romance had something to do with it.

He was full rival for my sarcastic mage. I asked him if he didn't want to go out in a blaze of glory and he promptly changed sides once again, even though I held onto Anders and basically told everybody else to go love themselves.

Smashing that whiney-ass elf's skull repeatedly against the ground was the highlight of my first playthrough.

You could...give him to Denarius? That would keep him from turning on you.

Rivalry had nothing to do with it, possibly something else. I checked my save right prior to this and him and Aveline spoke up after siding with the Mages about not being sure with this course of action but even after I decided still with the mages they both turned around real quick without any prompting what so ever. I was at maximum Rival. I did, however, do all quests possible for every character. Shot down his first romance attempt and it never came back up.
