Difficult to decide which forum this was supposed to go in.
One companion 'feature' I missed from Dragon Age: Awakening was the ability to completely respec a companion (except for class) so I could fit them into my party. In Dragon Age 2, this feature exists but it a much more limited way, characters who are respec'd do not have access to all the the specialization trees for their class.
For example, the character Justice in Dragon Age: Awakening was one of my favourites of all time. Playing a two-handed weapon warrior, adding him to the party in his default state provided little benefit. Using a respec tome, however, I could make him into a sword-and-shield warrior and it was all happy days.
In Dragon Age 2, I decided that in order to have a more whiney, emo party that I needed Fenris on side at all times. Being a two-handed warrior was not much use to my party make up, so I figured I'd respec him into a sword-and-board tank and it would be happy days. Only then, I realised that even if I were to respec him, he would not have access to the sword-and-shield specialty tree. Similarly, Merrill can never be a healer like I made Morrigan.
I understand the specialty trees are provided with the character's concept in mind, but surely we can rationalise a character learning new skills to compliment their team? Though I'm not developer, I can't imagine it's difficult to provide these specialties to NPCs and the increased functionality would be much appreciated. To myself, at least, multiple playthoughs would be much more interesting if I could choose an entirely new party without worrying about how it might be detrimental to my gameplay.
Thanks.

If you're on PC I believe there's a mod that does this.

Additional note: I only just realised that Fenris might be a little unbalanced as a sword-and-shield warrior, with Lyrium Ghost running.
Edit: though I suppose Justice with Spirit Warrior skills is much the same.

Personally I hate respecing for RP reasons (you can forget skills and lost constitution what?), but for PC there is the black emporium with respec potions.
Pretty good idea to respec everyone at one point or another, since bioware wastes early points on bad skills.

It is lame that the companions don't get specializations. Though they do have their own unique ones. Some of their's are very nice though. Varric's is very nice for him. He gets a ton of attack speed alone from it. More than the player can. Aveline's is very nice from a tank standpoint. Especially the stacking damage reduction.
There was an addon I saw where players added spirit healer to Anders. The ones truly missing a specialization of any kind is Carver and Bethany. It's very boring how at lvl 50 they would just have a point for every talent in the default trees.
What is more boring and boggles my mind is all the armor I loot that my pc can't wear yet neither can the companions. Why even have a mage loot warrior and rogue gear? Or at least let them equip helm, gloves and boots...

I wish there was a way to give Bethany earth/lightning spells. If you want to give her a damager build, you're pretty much restricted to elemental. As it stands, she can't really replace either of the mages in the endgame. If you think that Anders might not be around until in the endgame, you can't make Bethany a healer and if you think that something might happen to Merrill, you can't make Bethany a blood mage. I've been reluctant to add spell mods that add new skill trees to the game because of a bad experience with DA:O, but I'm thinking about it.

Bethany at lvl 50 can have every spell in the book. The only healer thing she's missing is Spirit Healer specialization but so is Anders...

Bethany can never cast Stonefist, even at level 50. Unless more skill trees appear at higher levels, she has elemental (fire/ice), spirit (spirit blast/dispel magic/walking bomb), entropy (hexes), the one that has mind blast and crushing prison in it, and creation (non-specialist healer).
It would be awesome if she could have the earth/lightning spells and access to spirit healer, blood mage, or force mage spheres. Yes, that would make her a lot like the PC, but is that such a bad thing?

Change the cast order via Tactics?
