It's not just idol. She's always been a ****, idol sword simply drove her completely nuts so she tried to murder everyone - mages, templars...
I believe sword is here for 1 reason - to not allow us to see a satisfying cutscene of Hawke eviscerating Meredith.
What's interesting about the story, in the end I hated Meredith, Orsino, viscount, Divine, revered mother... I only liked Arishok, and game forced me to kill him, since pirate **** ran away and never returned.
The only thing I didn't like about the story...

Would be nice to have some villains (Arishok to me wasn't really a villain, though much more satisfying opponent) in DA2 who weren't possessed, whispering to demons or twisted by magic swords...
