Liked:
  • Hackett's back! In person! (But please, the Alliance uniform hat is silly. Let him take it off in ME3.)
  • It seemed like getting rid of Cerberus and getting on good terms with the Alliance again was close.
  • More story, more epic Reaper talk at the end, more cool music, more stuff to think about (sacrificing a system full of guys from another species for example).
  • Watching indoctrination at work; it was amazing how everything seemed to make perfect sense to Kenson.
  • Was fun to play. Didn't have a lot of twists, but those it did have were unexpected.
Didn't like:
  • It was too short. Granted, it does push the story forward more than previous DLCs and that alone is probably a reason to buy it for those who play because of the story, but value for money is really low for this one. Virtually all the other DLCs for ME2 added more to the game, even the really cheap ones (Firepower Pack comes to mind here)
  • The whole going solo and being stealthy thing is just bad. It doesn't fit into the game gameplay-wise, it doesn't work well with the engine either and on top of that, Shepard even has teammates he could have taken along with no problems because they are very good at being stealthy (Thane, Kasumi). It also didn't make any sense story-wise in the first place. Hackett asking that Shepard go in alone seemed totally artificial, just to facilitate this experiment.
  • The mech control thing. Controlling something different than Shepard can be fun at times (think of the taxi in LotSB), but remote controlling a slow, weak, clumsy mech is just boring and always has been, in every game that's used it.
  • Story had implausible parts. Most notably, the "proof" Kenson mentioned to the Admiral. Reapers moving through a Mass Relay doesn't prove a thing, that could just as easily have been the Relay next to the Citadel (you know, from plan A, which failed). Also, whatever device the Reapers would use to enter this particular system, it's unlikely that it's the only one (oho, I think I just figured out ME3... :-P).
And yes, I would also have loved to see Ashley or Kaidan reintroduced before ME3. I suppose it's understandable how sending an Alliance soldier to batarian space is not a good idea, but you guys better have one hell of a romance in store for us in ME3! :-)

Arrival sucks

Just your opinion dude

I was under the impression that the whole point of this thread was for people to give their opinions on Arrival.

I quite liked arrival, the storyline was quite interesting,as was the idea of having just a single character to control, not a very long piece of dlc but what is in there is well worth a buy in buy opinion.Cant wait for ME3,is it 2012 yet:whistle:

I'm playing ME2 again and Arrival kicked in after the mission on Freedom's Progress. I opted to do it first instead of running off to do the first 3 loyalty quests. Instead of speaking to an image of Harbinger at the end, I got the insectoid Collector. After talking to Hackard, I was starting to feel somewhat apprehensive. Whatever would the others think when the Batarrians scream for blood? Shep's rep would go notorious, galaxy wide. I was kinda half-expecting some changes in attitude among those Shep would interact with on other worlds as she carried out the rest of the mission but I know it is unlikely the the game would not carry on as before. There is hardly likely waves of Batarrians going after her anytime soon in ME2. Image IPB

As it is, I feel the timiing of the mission is awry, kicked start 1/3 into the game. Repercussions of Shep's action has to be felt but there will be no indications of it. The bottom drops out and the story / immersion stumbles. Arrival should have been the "end" mission, after the suicide mission. If it is restricted within this time frame, the story would have flow better. Well, for me anyways.

I wish we could've learned more about that base and how Harbinger was able to make an appearance there.

Hmmm....I liked Arrival on the whole, tied up things nicely.... and I finally put one of my cannon Shep's through it...

the only thing I didn't like was the solo combat... I kept dying, even as maxed out vanguard + claymore... unless it could just be me taht sucked....>>

I'd honestly have to give Arrival 7/10

I liked it but its hard to be disappointed with Mass Effect 2. Each DLC brings something new and unique to an already fantastic experience and Arrival is no different. The story was intriguing, i also liked the fact the it was a solo mission, it made things feel more tense knowing there's no squad powers to help you out. The soundtrack was great as well. The only thing that I can honestly say that disappointed me overall is that, 1 it seemed a very short mission, 2 Its the last DLC for ME2 and finally I have to wait for March 2012 for ME3 which from what I've seen is looking fantastic.

I understand that Arrival is setting the premise for ME3, but it took me under a minute to clearly see this was a rushed job/cash in. The very first enemy I see, guess what Shepard says....."They saw US" O_o .Do I as a player aslo count as a companion now? Because clearly for it to be US there needs to be like more than one.....:?

Honestly... I thought it was very poorly executed.

The story was kind of stupid. What a surprise, they're working with Reaper tech and they got indoctrinated. Who didn't see that happening? I was okay with killing 300k Batarians, but I know that was only to set up for Mass 3's intro, which is fine I guess.

In any case, the lack of squadmates made it feel like a different game altogether, which felt bad man. Squadmates make the game go round, it's what makes it Mass Effect, really. I'd have loved to just have at least ONE come with me (Like LotSB) just so that Kenson could be in the team for the short time that she is. I guess I understand if you couldn't get the voice actors back for the DLC, but still... It really ruined what could have been a good experience, and Hackett's reasoning was retarded. "If they see an army of people grahyahda" is absolutely ridiculous. That entire mission, having one extra person wouldn't have screwed it up at all. I hope that there is little to no single only gameplay in Mass 3 (I'm okay if it's just the beginning, like in Mass 2).

It disrupts the story because the Reapers are all of a sudden ruining the purpose of what the Collectors were doing- Building a new vanguard reaper for them to use the Citadel relay like Saren and Sovereign were doing. Apparently the Reapers all of a sudden after Horizon decide to start going towards the galaxy at their own speed rather than waiting for the Collectors to complete their task. Arrival should've been a post-SM only thing.

I'm really hoping Arrival isn't setting the tone for ME3 combat-wise. The waves of enemies were really frustrating, it reminded me of DA2.

I really liked the Arrival, I was surprised that it got such tough reviews from IGN. In my opinion Lair of the Shadow Broker and the Arrival were two of the best DLC purchases I have ever made. I love when Harbingers holographic projection confronts Shepherd at the end.

It was meh. Using the Mattock, I believe I only died twice at the YMIR mech part.

Storyline itself was a great idea, it was just implemented poorly. Too many unanswered questions. Not enough dialogue options (my Shep spoke about 8 times without my input, all in situations which were out of character for my version of her). Music and graphical textures were damn good.

So, just did another playhthrought of the DLC after taking a month off the whole series. I have to say my original impressions of too short and odd seem to hold up, though I mostly improved my initial rating of the DLC by letting the disappointment fade. It's not great, but with the direction the story being dictated by ME3 and being unable to tell half that story really painting the DLC into a small square of availible material. I think most people were expecting a concluding sentiment when it really ends like Empire Stikes Back, with people mostly just trying to get ready for the big conclusion.

I wish I had watched that video before buying this DLC. Arrival sucks, and makes me more worried than ever about ME3. What the hell has happened to Bioware?

I was thinking about getting Arrival and just watched this video. Is that a truthful analysis?

No, it's not. Smudboy is a disgruntled fan who is angry that BioWare's vision for Mass Effect does not match up with his vision for it. He requires the story to hold the player's hand at all times. Otherwise he considers it a plot-hole.

Hmm... do we know how Mass Effect 3 will handle people who did not play Arrival? I'm probably not going to get it. $7 for a little mission to go commit genocide is not something I'd like to do. I'd rather be framed for it (paragon - accepts it, renegade - is reluctant) and have to take the fall because my reputation can handle it or whatever. I hope the game doesn't assume we did it.

in the first chapter of Mass Effect turns out that the Reeper invaded the galaxy through the Ciattadella being a huge portal, it turns out that each portal Arrival or almost can lead Reeper in the Galaxy, and not only that but they can also travel with the hyper-light up from the dark space inside the Galaxy, so those poor Batharian were sacrificed for nothing, and in any case it would be wrong to blow up other portals, the only way to travel in the Galaxy are the portals of mass, it would be impossible without them space travel, the ultra light is only for travel between systems.

Simplistic level design.
(Woohoo, corridors and lab facilities.)

Poorly executed "Stealth" gameplay.
(Meaning, don't shoot the "Batarian" whose two feet in front of you.)

Poorly contrived, bland, predicatable and hardly-existing dialogue.

(What few lines present are rehashes of early statements, poor foreshadowing, and Harbinger's lines are a blatant call back to Sovereign in ME1, too bad it lacks any of the weight, emotion, or story-gripping power.)

Its a shooting gallery.
(After the crap/lazy dialogue is over, we face wave after mind-numbing wave of the SAME enemies. Broken up midly by some usuing different weapons. Again, crap/lazy.)

Crap/Lazy story telling.
  • Hackett tells us we can't send in an "Army." Funny, didn't think THREE people was considered an ARMY.
  • Shepard is humanity's saviour, its icon, we NEED Shepard above all else; so please explain why we can so easily toss him/her off into the fray with no means of support? We should have planted a transmitter on Shep, so that in the event that he/she didn't call back, (Say in a day or so.) it would send a distress signal to the Normandy, which would swoop in to save him/her, FAR more BELIEVABLE than what happened in the DLC.
  • Kenson's Indotrinated? NO WAY! Honestly, no one has ever been involved with Reaper tech and come away without scars. Kenson and her crew were directly exposed to Object Rho for quite some time, its was inevitable this would happen. Herp Derp guys,
  • Why in God's name did NO ONE TIE SHEPARD UP? Shepard has always shown the uncanny ability to slip out of impossible situations, are you actually telling me that Harbinger is so stupid, that he couldn't invest in some zip-ties? Or better security, the guards we dispatched by ONE strike to their HELMETED heads. Again, lazy.
  • Why on earth is there a LOKI mech control station in a MEDICAL room? Makes no sense, what should have happened; the Normandy intercepts Shep's distress call, and flies to the rescue. Team infiltrates facility, and busts Shepard out of there.
  • And lastly, we have been told since day one that Mass Relays are indestructable. They'd have to be, or close to it, to survive the MILLIONS of years in SPACE, where things like ASTEROIDS and COMETS and SUPERNOVAS can happen far too often. Again, lazy.
In summary, Arrival was a steaming pile of yuck, especially compared to the previous entries. (Kasumi-chan, Overlord, Lair of the Shadow Broker.) I sincerely hope that this is NOT a reflection of what is in store for us in Mass Effect 3. Cheers. ;)

It is so much fun I have yet to complete it. I start and then get bored before even completing the 1st part of it.. That fact that I had to leave Miranda and Kasumi onboard lost its value to me.

If I am even more bored next year I may try and complete it prior to ME3 release.

7/10. A dull experience throughout. Although the final battle in space with the Alpha Relay in the background was relaxing. And the appearance of Admiral Hackett. :)
I loved LotSB 'cause its my favourite DLC for any game but this just didn't live up to my expectations. Especially from a company like Bioware.

The only real problem I have with the DLC is, that it's far too linear. You don't have any choices that make a difference and you are DA2 like a playball without any say in anything. Stuff happens around you and you are kind of involved but not really, that's not ME2 for me.
Is it dull? Kind of, it's true that there is little change in the level design, but I don't have a problem with that since it plays in a Jail and a Lab. They are supposed to be dull ; )
The fights on the other hand are fun, at least for me, especially the Project Rho fight is entertaining and depending on how you do it a real challenge that keeps you on your toes.
Making even the slightest bit of difference through choices should have been mandatory for a ME2 dlc but they thought "Too much work" or something similar, so only based on that I would give the DLC 6/10 points.
LotSB is similar in regards of making no difference, but it makes up for that through awesome gameplay, original enemies and a beautiful Map design.

Yeah, Lair is DEFINITELY the best DLC released for this game. Maybe the best DLC I've ever played for ANY game. It's got story, it's got action, it's got heart...

Arrival does feel rushed. I didn't even GET that it was supposed to be a stealth mission... I went in guns a'blazing and did what I always do. The "twist" was predictable (scientists. When will they learn?), though arguably the REAL surprise is that you can't prevent the kaboom.

But then, it's for the sake of the plot of the third game so it's forgivable. I look forward to dismissing the claims of Reapers and submitting myself for psychiatric evaluation while earth is enslaved ^_^
