Playing As Fem. Shep If You're A Male

I was playing my alternative career, a fem. shep. I was talking to Jacob, which at the moment my character is "courting."
A newbie in the club asks, "what game is this." I reply, "One of the greatest RPG's in my humble opinion." Then he responds, "You're playing as a female and it seems like the conversation is getting a little heavy. Are you gay?"
Why is it, homophobes call you gay for role-playing as a female character? I've responded "Call me what you want, I just want to experience another side of the story, from a female perspective. Sorry if my eyes don't always look through the same patriarchal glasses society provides for us males."
Has anyone else experienced this?

No, I don't think I've experienced anyone say anything of that sort about a video game.JadeEffect wrote...

I haven't personally experienced this, but that's usually because I don't play ME2 anywhere outside of my own room. Anyway, why do they do it? Because they are stupid pieces of...yeah. It's because they have nothing better to do than be complete dicks to others simply because they can. Ignore them. They're probably babbling mindless Call of Duty fans. No respect for real plot.
Just screw them all man, they aren't worth the time.

I'm sure that's exactly what you said right then and there.
It is what I said right then and there. Sorry if my response seems "unbelieveable" but I'm an ass to anyone who displays gender inequality and/or has negative comments to say about the gay community..

I play as FemShep, simply because I'm one of the people who prefers Jennifer Hale to Mark Meer. It's kinda funny because my FemShep is a lesbian, despite the fact that I'm a gay man.
Mark Meer definitely is not as good as Jennifer Hale, but I enjoy playing as both Shepards.

I'm not gay myself, but criticizing someone for their sexual orientation is just stupid, and it can border on downright cruel sometimes. People have committed suicide because of this. It's sad.

Well color me surprised to discover there are tactless antisocials at an anime/gaming club.JadeEffect wrote...

I always chalk up this weird phobia about males playing female characters to some sort of pent-up gender identity issue.

Do you think the response would have been the same for a woman who plays as dudeshep and romances Miranda or Jack?
I wonder that too. I know a girl who plays a male shep, same reason why I play a fem. shep. But I don't know what the response would be for her role-playing as a male.

For example extra cutscenes for both genders, and how people respond to you.

I'm going to quote myself.

I see it like this way: I'm the observer and not the character. Similar to reading a book.
For example there's no way I wouldn't read a book or watch a movie because the lead character is not a male. The same goes to games.
I play both but recently I've been playing pretty exclusively my femShep. I see no reason not to. I'm not the character, it's Commander Shepard and for me it's female.

Besides, FemShep is overrated. I tried it once, and Jennifer Hale, always seemed so emotionless in all of her lines.
