I was in my University Commons (an area where college students can hang out, study, eat food, play games, etc).  I'm about of a anime/gaming club (don't call me a nerd!).  Last night I've decided to bring in my xbox and ME2/Jade Empire to show people how awesome these games are, and well... if you don't think these games are awesome then "SHUN THE NON-BELIEVER!"

I was playing my alternative career, a fem. shep.  I was talking to Jacob, which at the moment my character is "courting."

A newbie in the club asks, "what game is this."  I reply, "One of the greatest RPG's in my humble opinion."  Then he responds, "You're playing as a female and it seems like the conversation is getting a little heavy.  Are you gay?"

Why is it, homophobes call you gay for role-playing as a female character?  I've responded "Call me what you want, I just want to experience another side of the story, from a female perspective.  Sorry if my eyes don't always look through the same patriarchal glasses society provides for us males."

Has anyone else experienced this?

No, I don't think I've experienced anyone say anything of that sort about a video game.

I'm sure that's exactly what you said right then and there.

I haven't personally experienced this, but that's usually because I don't play ME2 anywhere outside of my own room. Anyway, why do they do it? Because they are stupid pieces of...yeah. It's because they have nothing better to do than be complete dicks to others simply because they can. Ignore them. They're probably babbling mindless Call of Duty fans. No respect for real plot.

Just screw them all man, they aren't worth the time.

I have had no homophobic responses so far, out of my 7 Shep's two are female. I just think it adds something different to the story, and I cannot see any problem with it. Personally, anyone inclined to call you names due to the sex you play, should just be ignored.

Tell him you rather look at fem sheps ass for 70% of the game than at the back of male shep. He might understand that.

It doesn't make sense that a gay man would play as a woman. Try to tell this young fellow exactly what the term entails.

I play as FemShep, simply because I'm one of the people who prefers Jennifer Hale to Mark Meer. It's kinda funny because my FemShep is a lesbian, despite the fact that I'm a gay man.

It is what I said right then and there.  Sorry if my response seems "unbelieveable" but I'm an ass to anyone who displays gender inequality and/or has negative comments to say about the gay community..

Mark Meer definitely is not as good as Jennifer Hale, but I enjoy playing as both Shepards.

I'm not gay myself, but criticizing someone for their sexual orientation is just stupid, and it can border on downright cruel sometimes. People have committed suicide because of this. It's sad.

This topic pops up in literally every single game forum where you are able to make a custom character. I just find it completely insane that no one questions that you are playing as a Troll, Elf, Orc, A Space soldier, etc etc.. or how those things relate to how you live your life.. but then they question why you would play as a female.

Do you think the response would have been the same for a woman who plays as dudeshep and romances Miranda or Jack?

Well color me surprised to discover there are tactless antisocials at an anime/gaming club.

I always chalk up this weird phobia about males playing female characters to some sort of pent-up gender identity issue.

I'm bi and I play as both genders, but I have straight friends that play as both as well and know a few that play the opposite exclusively.

All a matter of taste.

I wonder that too.  I know a girl who plays a male shep, same reason why I play a fem. shep.  But I don't know what the response would be for her role-playing as a male.

I actually like playing as fem shep. Not many games where a women is responsible for saving the world, let alone the galaxy. Also it varies differently from the male shep story.

For example extra cutscenes for both genders, and how people respond to you.

If they condemn you for something like picking a different gender on a video game, I would ignore the ignorant....

Cuz knowledge is power! o_O

One would think that males like to look women more than other males...

I'm going to quote myself.

Tup3xi wrote...
I see it like this way: I'm the observer and not the character. Similar to reading a book.

For example there's no way I wouldn't read a book or watch a movie because the lead character is not a male. The same goes to games.

I play both but recently I've been playing pretty exclusively my femShep. I see no reason not to. I'm not the character, it's Commander Shepard and for me it's female.

Because you're ROLE-PLAYING as a female? Do you know what it means to be a female? If you're not a female, then you have no reason to role play as a female.

Besides, FemShep is overrated. I tried it once, and Jennifer Hale, always seemed so emotionless in all of her lines.
